Need Internet but only for a couple of months...

Options
Ok,

I need internet but only for a couple of months. This means i need something cheap and easy. Don't mind if it's dial up even.
Could someone list some extremely cheap dial-up and broadband deals that are on a month to month basis?

Thanks in advance

Joe

virgin broadband is only a 1 month contract with free broadband modem and free activation.

    £14.99 a month for 512k

    7-10 day activation time.
i have been on virgin for about a year now and the service has been 100% no downtime etc.
    i use the £17.99 2mb service.

Careful: free activation on Virgin is NOT free!!! Or at least it remains free only if you stay with them for 12 monthsl. Otherwise (as in this case) you will have to pay 50 pounds to them when you cancel just for thier costs of activation.... I discovered it in the small prints a month ago when I was looking for a broadband provider.

To the problem of short-term internet access (such as the two months you require), I would suggest prepaid dialup cards. One solution I have used in the past is Mip Cards.
This is also good in a transition period between providers (late activations etc).

A freephone number with no contracts, no subscriptions, and no hidden monthly costs - Myinternetpass is the convenient new way to surf the internet and save you money.
There are two Myinternetpass options, ‘30-days Anytime’ and ‘2000 minutes Anytime’. Both are priced at £10.00 GBP each.

Joe, if you've got a laptop with wi-fi capability bring it down to your local library that has free hotspots.
    I know nothing

Surely even with the cancellation charge they are still cheaper as you get a free modem and £14.99 per month broadband charge.

http://www.newnet.co.uk (reccomended in Martin's article) charge £17.99 per month with a £47 setup charge without a modem. I reckon this still makes Virgin cheaper?

Does anyone else have any other suggestions, my brother is in a similar situation and has asked me to look around for the best deal for him.

    Leopard,
not sure what you mean when you say Virgin is cheaper.

Joe is asking for a way to access the Internet for two (2) months.
    If you have to:
    - pay line activation (and Virgin will make you pay that if you leave before 12 months) at 50 pounds
    - monthly rental 14.99
after two months you would have paid pay 79.98.
and you have had to wait line activation which takes 7-10 days!

That is a totally crazy suggestion to me!!!

With the MIPS cards option (much more suitable to this case) you have no contract, no wait for any activation and are free to use it at lower cost that normal local calls dial-up (less than 10 pounds per month).
It is really ideal for short term needs, even if not broadband (but joe said she was ok with dial-up).

For your brother (which might be in a total different situation) I would suggest to evaluate the real circumstances. Take into consideration that a USB ADSL modem is worth today ~6 GBP on ebay (11 GBP if bought brand new in a high-street shop), so not a huge gift from the ISP.
Good deals on broadband are described in different threads of this section.

Having looked at one for myself recently I went for e7broadband and have to say they are not too bad for what I need and the price I paid was simply great (120 pounds for 12 months, free line activation and 2Mbit/s; they also had a free modem which I did not take as they wanted 8 pounds P&P...). That was just a one-off offer they made, but if you look out there are periodical offer which might give you some real bargain.
