Sygate has picked up someone scanning my computer.

1)Somebody is scanning your computer.
Your computer's TCP ports:
113, 79, 23, and 21 have been scanned from 207.33.111.36..

2)Somebody is scanning your computer.
Your computer's UDP ports:
1029, 1031, 1032, and 1033 have been scanned from 61.132.74.135..

3)Application Hijacking has been detected
The application: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe try to launch another application: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe to go to remote host g-images.amazon.com

What do I do and should I be worried?

It more than likely Adobe trying to search for an update, dont worry
as It will also happen if you open a .pdf file on a website.

Edit: Right click the sygate icon and click on options
then Ok, and put a tick in Hide Notification.
  • Rikki,

I wouldn't be too concerned. If your ports are being scanned, there is a possibility that someone is trying to gain access to your computer, but if Sygate (my preferred firewall) has picked this up, you're already safe as these are blocked - unless you've told Sygate otherwise.

The first address corresponds to scan.sygate.com, which suggests it is a test by sygate on itself. The second is non-existent, meaning that (more than likely) someone has attempted to hide their snooping - the details are a bit techy so I won't bore you. In either case, I wouldn't sweat it.

Lastly, if Acrobat needs to use an external resource (an image from another site or similar) it may 'send out' for it, or it could be a link to a web site or something similar. It depends which document you were looking at, and what it needed.

If you haven't already done so, go for "belt and braces" by installing Spybot Search and Destroy from here and enable the browser immunisation feature to protect from incoming gremlins.

I haven't altered any settings from when I installed it. Are there any I should change?

I am assuming it is automatically blocking anyone from scanning my computer.
It tell me some-one is and not that its been blocked?

DO NOT CHANGE A THING apart from notification pop-up in post #2
  • If I want to check out my ports and see how safe I am on the internet, I go to Shields UP http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2 This will scan all your ports and if you are in Stealth mode, then you are fine.
