Living in hotels or clubs was the norm for single people until relatively recently. There were very few one-bedroom flats available and bedsits were socially inferior, because you had to do your own cooking. Places like Earls Court in London were full of large victorian family houses run as 'private hotels'.

Personally if I had the choice of living in a hotel and didn't have to work, I agree I would go somewhere like Malta where you can live cheaply in the sun.

If this couple do have a council house and are using it simply for storage, then that's disgraceful.

Austin, just received a leaflet for full board plus drinks and snacks and spa sessions at La Fortina, Malta for £399 a week including flight - Ill meet you by the pool or in one of the 5 restaurants

Pretty much what it was like, according to my father. He lived in a small London hotel in the 1950s. He ate his meals with elderly couples (religion and politics were forbidden as topics of conversation) and they all used to go into the 'lounge' afterwards to listen to the wireless and smoke. If he had to go out for the evening, he had to let the landlady know to cancel his dinner. Needless to say, 'lady callers' were not permitted in the rooms. :rotfl:
