Here's a solution! Live in a hotel!

I can understand that staying in a hotel (no gas, elec, council tax etc) would work out OK, but the cost of eating out for 3 meals a day would be a killer (plus I'd be the size of a small elephant within a couple of years!)

Fresh fruit. Packs of noodles. Packets of instant custard. Biscuits. All in your room.

Some people have a canteen at work, or a microwave, so could avail themselves of that. If you had a small kitchen at work with a microwave you could even nuke yourself some soup and put that in a food flask for a hot evening meal.

That is what Travelodge and the like used to be like, almost cosy.
I went into a couple of their rooms in the last year and now they are really minimalist. Reminiscent of those loos that come out of the ground and then self-clean. It would be hard to feel at ease in them now. Not even a wardrobe.

But the old-style ones, with a bath and dark green carpet, those matching heavy curtains and equally heavy bed counterpane, the long dressing table area with drawers and a good sized wardrobe and cubby holes ... was doable.

My friend's Dad used to live in a hotel. When he went to stay with my friend, friend would go out to work and come home to find Dad had done some odd thing like repaint a room or tile the bathroom or spring clean the sitting room.

It was because he was so bored of being waited on hand and foot. I used to say, "I wish I could get bored of that" but he'd just look at me funny.

A Travelodge would be unimaginable! The only hotel I'd live in would be the Gritti Palace in Venice - in my dreams with the prices they charge.

Not sure where all this waiting on hand and foot comes into it. I'd imagine that sheets changing and cleaning, on a heavily discounted room, only happens once a week. And that's really it isn't it. Any more waiting on and you'd be paying an arm and a leg for it.

I've never stayed in anywhere posher than a Travelodge, so not even sure what sort of waiting on could go on. In most Travelodge's there isn't even a breakfast, you have to go next door where you pay for it as you eat it.

Oh I thought the poster was stating that her Dad wasn't used to staying with her friends. I assummed being treated as a guest and having his meals prepared for him. Maybe I've got it wrong But your right about travel lodge:D
