Thats true. Legally, any document can be a cheque if it has the right information on it - but it is very specific and probably wouldnt be a good idea to try the theory out as it would probably be rejected if even the slightest thing was wrong.

I would however, love to see someone bring a cow into my bank and pay it into their account, and for us to send it off through clearing. That would be a massive giggle!!!!

It could be an urban myth, but I'm sure I once heard about a cheque written on a raw egg (still within its shell) which was honoured. Not sure I'd accept such a cheque, even if the egg was hard-boiled!

  • No cow, no egg, but Halifax....

A friend of mine runs a hairdressing salon, one of her customers paid her with a cheque written on a Halifax current account, and she took the guarantee card and wrote the number on the back of the cheque, but not in the box that Halifax provide for this.

The customer then stopped the cheque, and Halifax are refusing to honour the cheque, because the guarantee card no. was not written in the box on the back of the cheque.

Can they do this? - from other posts in this thread, it looks like a cheque can be anything as long as the information is correct.

Can any of you banking insiders advise?

    Many Thanks...

They cannot refuse payment because the guarantee number was not written in the box they print. She should complain to the Halifax and then the FOS if they dont overule the decision.

Although it may be worth verifying that is actually the case before complaining. It could be a cashpoint only card was used or a card belonging to a different account.

    - I will tell my friend to check her details and persue Halifax further if necessary.

  • The same has just happened to me, silly me, but in my case it's torn all the way down at about an inch from the right edge of the cheque. I've taped it on the back and it's all readable and quite neat -the tear doesn't go through the amount but does in the middle of the signature... Everything else is intact.
Do you think the bank might have reasons to refuse it? I'm very worried it won't be accepted and it's a tax return from HM Revenue and Customs so it might be a nightmare trying to get a new cheque from them!
Anyone out there who's been in the same situation or who perhaps works in a bank...?
    Please help!! Thank you!

You can get a claim form to send to the Bank of England.

I think these forms are available at the Post office.

Afraid youneed bothe serial numbers... otherwise there's nothing to stop you ripping all your notes in half, then going to different banks for replacements and doubling your cash!

You need at least part of the second serial number as well.
