I actually do trust online banking (unless you're putting your details into unknown foreign websites). I think it's far more secure than "physical" payment. I've been doing online banking and paying for things online for years (ten years at least in the case of online shopping). I've never had a problem with it nor anyone I know personally. In fact the only problems in terms of fraud and card cloning of the people I know personally arose from real world contact, scam phone calls to get personal details, cards being stolen, cards being skimmed by shop employees, cards being cloned by equipment attached to ATMs etc are things that have happened to people I know but I don't know anyone personally who's actually had problems because of online transactions. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I think it's much rarer than traditional fraud techniques.

Urm, If you don't use online banking how can all this have occured? unless you have been using your card in risky places?
I dont use my card in anything more risky that one of those Cash dispensers banks put on the walls, assuring me they were as safe as going to the cashier. Until somebody invented a clone device of course. I cetainly wouldnt Risk taking CASH to a "risky place" never mind my Bank card. It didnt stop it getting cloned though. and it doesnt require an internet banking methos for it to happen. Not everyone relies on a computer for safety, especially where money is concerned.

To quote, I DONT bank online, I just dont want to risk putting my details and passwords onto my computer, knowing that they are still "floating around" in my Hard Drive, for any, lets say experienced hacker, find access to, were my computer to be stolen.

I check my statements from a posted bank statement, pay for my shopping via card, and get cash from dispensers when I need it, I have no need to go online to do that.

Isn't just using a cash point now considered risky? I've not used one for probably two years now. I get cashback with my shopping now. I'm constantly hearing of various cash points that are cloned and I don't consider any of them safe to use.

All in the name of progress.... I would like to hear as to what is actually better nowadays. Personally I'm stumped on that one... :o

  • Got to admit, when they brought chip and pin out I could just envision people being tortured for their pin numbers - and it happened.

I think the only time online banking can be compromised is if their security certificate fails (which it isnt likely to do?) or if your computer isn't secure, For example - you've downloaded dodgy software/material thus allowing a trojan/virus/keylogger thingywhatsit onto your PC. (Feel free to correct me on the title for these things cos I cant remember)

I don't like online banking myself, but I do enjoy the convenience. Personally I prefer to conduct my banking in as private surrounding as possible and it doesn't get any more private than that (excluding if the above happens!)

I never use cashpoints - unless I REALLY have to. I always have a good mooch around it as well before I put my card in.

In all honesty, I hate my cards! I love the convenience, but hate the flaws which are so easily exploited. Just six months ago the garage around the corner was 'done' for the THIRD!!! time for credit card cloning. Its scary, it really is. Maybe we should just keep it all under the mattress like Grandma used to. haha

  • Easy done. Have a look at www.chipandspin.co.uk. It seems that this technology is not as sound as the banks make out.

Agree with you one hundred per cent.

Transactions are slower than thirty odd years ago......... why? I think that is easy.. If they processed your cheque quickly (or any kind of transaction) then what do they gain? Apart from a reputation for being good.. If they sit on it for a week or so, they gain interest off of your money.

This 'ghosting' lark is dreadful! My boss is getting such hassle for direct debits not being paid out. The whole situation is ridiculous and they take (are taking) ages to sort it all out. That's progress for you folks!

There is alot to be said for manual labour.. :D
