It's a worry that 'glitches' like these can occur.

If it was small amount - it could catch out the less observant of us.

It is worrying. A friend of mine had his card stopped merely for using it in a different town than he usually used it in. So it's quite bizarre there's such a huge discrepency and double standard in these anti-fraud and "anti-glitch" measures.

I don't really quite understand what this "glitch" is supposed to be. As an electronic engineer and software developer the only "glitch" I can think most likely is human error (someone at some point manually pushed through the transaction again).

This duplicate payment process is also known as 'ghosting' where the same amount for the same merchant goes through twice. This happens quite a bit in my experience and always worth checking your statements. On top of that the bank should be able to 'refuse' the 2nd payment as it will be on hold and it will be returned withing 2days, alternatively if they have taken the payment already, ask them to repay it by CHAPS poayment which will cost them nothing in comparison to reimbursing for any acct charges your boss gets. A CHAPS payment clears same day

This 'ghosting' happened nearly 24 hours later.. went thru as 'signed for' transaction! And I agree, bank should've picked up on it.

Boss has been told that it will be a week to put money back - which is leaving him very overdrawn (to say the least), plus dd's held up and he can't withdraw cash or basically use his account!!

The fact that this seems to be a 'common' problem/occurence - and it is something that 'happens' - just doesn't seem to me to be a very satisfactory response. It shouldn't happen at all and definitely not be common!

This happend to me a couple of weeks ago. Paid my rent over the phone using debit card, i did notice that it seemed to take longer than usual to debit my account. Later in the week tried to use my card to pay for a small amount of shopping and it was refused. When i got home i checked my balance and what should have been over £100 was showing a big fat zero!! Rang bank in a panic and the adviser told me that I had been double debited for my rent, was overdrawn by £200 quid and should ring my landlord asap to get them to sort it. Also that i would have to fight the landlord to get my charges covered for the error.
Then...10mins later my bank rang me back, lady said that she had noticed that the reference for the 2 payments were identical, that there had been some sort of error and the bank would be recrediting my account within 5mins and no charges would be made. phew!
Alls well that ends well, i can only conclude that this was an error at the banks end and thankfully i spoke to someone able to sort it out speedily.

Doesn't give much confidence in their systems. Validation and verification checks for things like duplicates are really the very simple and basic stuff of software development. I remember doing that kind of programming back in school even. Not sure why the banks are incapable of implementing the same functional checks.

May be I am getting old..... but this sort of 'stuff' just didn't happen years ago.... :o (No computer faults - only human errors.. same thing, right?)

Cheques could be cleared in 3 days........ now it takes longer... why?? Progress?

Meanwhile - how many banks/merchants, are getting fabulous interest on other peoples money???

I heard (correct me if I am wrong), that Paypal/Ebay, now take your money and sit on it for around 2 weeks, and then give the 'seller' permission to send the goods. I believe they are calling it 'security'.

Grumpy old woman... thats me these days...

I agree, I dont have Paypal a\c because quite frankly,...I dont trust them, its bad enough worrying about my bank a\c, how we have to constantly check it....just in case.

I was strictly against internet banking when it was first introduced, I am still just as against it now. I dont care what security devices they claim to be securing it with, the fact of it is, I have to accept my bank has now introduced a new back door, and theres a "chance" I could have my account "dipped" in by fraudsters or scammers. This NEVER used to be the case before they installed a back door.

Chip n Pin, the new revolution of card fraud "Oh this is fool proof" I was assured, of course over the time, it has been found to be "flawwed", as flawwed as having my bank details etched in an old HD that a format would not be enough to rid it from. As flawwed as my ability to do a transaction form my account, without even having to be there.

Since the introduction of "online banking" I have had my card cloned, I have had transactions unauthorised, I find myself constantly having to check my account, no longer for fear of me overspending, but for the fear of somone else doing it for me.

Urm, If you don't use online banking how can all this have occured? unless you have been using your card in risky places?
