Thank you very much for your advice. I'm a bit crushed that I might be slightly depressed as my life is pretty good considering what other people go through. I just can't seem to get myself out of this rutt

The depression is a chemical imbalance, it makes the lows seem lower and dulls out the highs in your life so you don't recognise them. It's not your fault, your body is just out of blanace at the moment and you need help to get things back on track. Go and visit you GP and don't worry about getting addicted, that was the old fashioned treatments they used to use not todays new-fangled meds.

    Good luck xx

Just a thought - do you eat a well balanced diet? I am just wondering if the 11am sleepiness is actually something like a sugar-crash? Might pay to mention it to your doctor to rule out any issues there.

I was wondering about glandular fever which can have the symptoms you mention, it's very common in young adults

I agree it is vitally important that you eat properly if you are feeling low, as well as the exercise you are already doing. And doing something new is a really good idea too!

Other than that, have you seen the NHS funded online CBT course? There's a link here but it's to a site that sells things so I'm not sure if it is allowed? I'm not connected to it in any way btw!

You can get it free through your GP and it may be worth a try if you want to avoid medications.

Good luck with your appt (assuming you are still going?) Just tell them how it is and take it from there.

Oh, and don't think you are not entitled to be depressed - it's a very individual thing and you cannot compare yourself to others! Plus, thinking you are wrong to feel this way will only make you worse, as in my experience, guilt and depression are closely linked.

There may be people worse off than you and there may be people better off than you, but that is, frankly, irrelevant to your experience!!

If you had a broken arm and the person next to you had two broken arms, you wouldn't expect your pain to disappear just because they were in a worse postition than you, would you?

ETA: I've now put the correct link in - goodness only knows what I was doing there! I'm pretty low myself at the moment and it puddles my brain. That's my excuse anyway...

    Sorry about that.

Looking at sandy2's post made me wonder about your thyroid. Ask your GP about it as the symptoms for an underactive thyroid are very similar too.

Depression comes in different forms, and can be caused by a lot of things.

I've has post natal depression and also suffer from SAD which hit me really hard one winter a couple of years back. The doctor I saw ran me through all the tests to rule out everything else first, so I now know my thyroid, other hormones, blood sugar etc. are all OK, but I now know I need to take vitamin D from September onwards every year or face the consequences.

I've been in the same place of work for over 20 years, and things can get sameish, but having different hobbies outside of work can help brighten things up a bit. I now do a martial arts class which gives me great self confidence, a way of releasing pressure when I've had a bad day, and gives me something new to learn every week. I like it better than going to the gym, it's a bit competitive without getting too serious, and you don't need to be superfit or a size 10 to participate.:j

I was actually wondering whether you might think about doing some voluntering.

I feel much the same as you do at the moment, and Im determined to get back to volunteering, it doesnt have to be superchallenging, you could work in a charity shop, or you could mentor young people! there are scores of ideas, and there will be something for you.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Depression isn't logical. It doesn't matter if you've won the lottery. You could have tons of reasons to feel happy and still feel like the world is ending.

Well done for recognising that things aren't right and wanting to do something about it. It doesn't have to be full blown depression (which is may well be) but just feeling down can be a real burden. People often lash out at those around them because they feel unable to express themselves in any other way.

Whatever is causing you to feel like this, I hope you feel better soon.

    Best Wishes

I can't help but agree about the underactive thyroid. A simple blood test will either eliminate this or get you the treatment you need. Ask for it to be done, she/he will be only too willing to help.

Have you talked to your BF and your family to see what they think? It could well be very helpful and the actual talking it through will do you so much good.

All the very best Jo, you've some great advice in this thread, isn't it wonderful that people care about you! :D
