  • Only just noticed this thread and would like to join in. Will take my readings tomorrow on gas and electricity. Already trying to save on both, do not use drier now and trying to cut down on dishwasher. Im sure you can buy something you plug in to monitor your energy use, anyone know how much these cost. The government should supply these with the energy saving bulbs as I think I would get a shock to know how much energy my labour saving appliances cost to run. We don't have any children here which is saving us a fortune. When my kids were teenagers, my son used to take his jeans off, wash them and put in drier for max time. He found this cheaper than buying two pairs and he did not have to pay bills.
  • Telling OH about this challange yesterday and he pointed out that Daily Mail were offering a free monitor so will be getting one of these. I will be interested to see how much my dishwasher and drier cost to run.
  • Just took this weeks reading, still creeping up. 4462 which is 133 in the last week. I really can't see how I'm going to get this down, tried everything.

Do you know where you are using the most electricity. Is it worth you getting an energy monitor and finding out what is using the most?

We sent off for one of these through the Daily Mail and are still waiting for the monitor - they haven't even cashed our cheque yet for the postage:mad: . Don't think we will ever get it so might just go and buy one - anyone know who we would contact to see where it is?

Thanks DC and Sue - I never open the windows, only our bedroom and sometimes the bathroom one :o I will definitely get some curtains but we're a bit skint and we've got a big bay window and there's no curtain rails so we're thinking it's going to cost a bit.

I think as we spend most of our time in the living room we'll keep the central heating down to a couple of hours in the morning and a couple at night before bed and just have the fire on during the day. But i'm going to try and keep it on quite low and just wrap up lots. It's my hands that get cold and I hate having cold hands!

Have you consider bubble wrap on the windows until you can afford curtains. My Son was in the same boat, new flat no money. I had read on this site about bubble wrap and got some free from my local Asda. The boxes apples come in all have a few sheets of this. Its really easy you just wet the window and stick the sheets on the window. Has made a great difference. Does't look horrible from the outside at all (I thought it would)

    Hi Welshlassie
I do have one, and the biggest culprit was my fan oven, I now use my remoska more often. During the week we only use an average of 11 - 15 units a day, it's the weekends that knock it right up, particularly this last one when we all snuggled up indoors for most of it.
Having said all that, I've been playing with the figures and I'm on target for a bill just under £200, compared to the £300 for the last quarter.

Another week's figures and they're not pretty!

    t1 13037-12933 = 104 (down 7:T )
    t2 14258-14167 = 121 (up 61  )

So from that I think we can say that using you iron to heat a bedroom all night costs somewhere in the region of 50 -60 units

Well, looking at the positive, at least it was over night and the units are a third of the cost!
  • Last week............ am on 1326 so that's 118 units from last week. So, am back to my week two average.

This week it's 1444 so that's, hold on, 118 units again this week. Well, at least it's not going up eh!

    Hello pandapaws & all,

    hmmmm this week's readings : Rate 1 : 76.98 - 37.41 units used & Rate 2 : 10.56 so 5.93 units used . Total units : 43.34.

Seems like my usage is going up & I reckon it's mainly seasonal ; lights going on earlier, spending more time at home at the week ends etc.

Oh well, I'm still spending a third less than I do on the gas
