  • Thank you Different Corner.
I dont want to sound like I'm on a "one woman mission" to get people to look after their fish properly, but its a subject close to my heart.
There is more to fish keeping than sticking a goldfish in a bowl and hoping it survives more than a week.
If any one wants any advice, please dont hessitate to ask me. If I dont know the answer I know plenty experts who do.
  • Just to add Different Corner. As I mentioned before, fish dont need light to survive.
As long as there are no live plants in your tank, then you're fine with the light on only a few hours a day.
Just set the timer for when you and your family are there to enjoy watching your fish.

Bit late posting my reading...but better late than never;)

My initial reading was 79636, 2nd one was 79732 - meaning I'd used 96 units. Had hoped to reduce this to 80, but read my meter on Tuesday (4th) and it was 79834:mad: - meaning I'd actually used 102 units!!! I'm surprised as the 1st week I used my dryer & washing machine loads, but didn't last week:confused: .

Oh well....we'll see how I do next week...but for this week, I'm in the red

To quote Different_Corner "fishtank *was* on all day"

Please, please, please anyone reading this DO NOT switch off your fish tank.
Fish effectively live in their own urine.
All fish tanks - cold water & tropical should have a filter. No excuses. It should never be switched off. The beneficial bacteria living in the filter prevent the fish dying a horrible nasty death from ammonia and nitrite poisoning.
Fish do not however need light (but live plants do)
By all means switch the tank light off if you want to save money
    .

Well done Tabatha Kitten. I'm a fish lover myself and would hate to think of people turning OFF their tank/aquarium. I also pointed out a couple of weeks ago, but now that Pandapaws is back on the thread I've PM'd her to ask if she'll change the part about them in the "things to reduce" post on the 1st page of the thread.

    Thanks again.

    Sue

Welshlassie, how much did it cost?

BTW, for anyone thinking of getting energy saving bulbs, they were on offer in Morrisons at 5 for 50p a couple of weeks ago. Anyone know if they still are?

I don't know if they still send them out, but my supplier has sent me a yellow plastic one for free in the past, twice!

Can I join this challenge too pls? I am very aware of the fact that we use far too much electricity (and gas for that matter!)

EDIT: I'm going to include my Gas on this too, see if I can reduce that a bit :)

    Electric 76455
    Gas 347
    at 12.40am on 8th November

Probably a bit mad taking it this late but I do usually stay up late at the weekend. Might get another one in the morning though.

I think my main concern is my gas so I think i'll keep track of my gas at the same time as this. We have such a cold house, we've got blinds but no curtains so can get drafty. I have cut the heating down quite a bit but still have it on way too much and have the fire on A LOT. Be better when i'm back at work full time though.

Oh look at me waffling on, somebody stop me pls! :rotfl:

Modern dishwashers are supposed to be more efficient than hand washing. i.e it would have used less than 3 bowls worth of heated water.

If your water heating is gas, that would reduce the difference, but don;t think it's worth spending an hour doing it by hand.

My OH definitely agrees with you there too!:rotfl: Had hot water sitting in the tank anyway so thought we might as well use it to wash the dishes and save money on putting on the dishwasher instead of letting it go to waste!

Anyway this week all our hard work has paid off as my reading for this week is .......wait for it...............57406. That's a reduction of:

    95 UNITS:eek:

    Last week used 190 units so a reduction of 50% - yippee!!:j :j :j :j

Bit later this am, but heres the meter readings,

Gas 6639 (+10!) Cant think of a genuine readson for this, so may have to investige!

    Electric R1 3961 (+31!)/ R2 13900 (+16). Have had dishwasher, washer & tumble only on at night.

Am in process of putting blinds/curtins up on windows leading into the `leantoo` - not grand enough for veranda/ conservertory! Only holds tumble dryer & bins! But have never needed these against these windows before, as the `leantoo` acts as a porch. Me thinks we`re in for a long cold winter season!
Haven`t opened the curtains at the back of the house in over a week!
