Granted, most garages with check the car over as a courtesy, and more than likely to see if there's any other work they can get done while you are there ;) but nothing from the actual service is anything to do the MOT.

part of the service is checking the brakes etc for safety surely

Nope, not officially. Like I say, it's just courtious to look it over.

  • ...and that's why people don't like main dealers...
  • Also it's sometimes worth staggering your MOT with the service, so your car gets some kind of look over every six months.
When I had cars that I was keepoing for a while I'd tend to do an 710 and filter change at the same time as the MOT as I knew everything else was fine and the car was runing ok.

    Mr Bobbles...

We always do a 105point check on cars, whether it's in for a service/MOT/brake check or even radio code! Customer safety and satisfaction is part of what a dealer does! Im saying, not all garages will include this, which is why you shouldn't presume it's being done just because it's being serviced!

Hmm, my sister has a car that she does around 40k a year in, she gets its serviced on the button and does nothing else than checking the oil weekly and taking it to the garage if something is broken / not working. So if she got a new golf, it could go for three years without the brakes being checked if she followed the VW service schedule?

As I said above, VW do not ignore the rest of the car when it's in for a service, or any other job...it just may not happen at all garages.

When i take my car for a service i expect them to check everything over, bulbs, suspension, cv joints, brake wear signs of rust etc and report anything that needs doing back to me

You may want to check exactly what is included. I was shocked to find that a local Jap specialists top service didn't check bushes, gaitors and cv boots etc for signs of wear/splits and was basically nothing more than a glorified engine service despite charging more than most places for a major.
