Builder I once helped , wanted roof battens screwed to the rsj , to aid the cladding with plasterboard. So it was lots of small holes rather than a few large holes

The trick is to avoid cheap drill bits from DIY stores.

I cooked loads of cheap drill bits whilst trying to drill through a 25mm steel bar. So I went down to my local engineering supplies store and bough a set of high quality metal drill bits. I started small then worked up to the larger sizes whilst lubricating it with oil. It went through the steel like a hot knife through butter.
