  • Just a random thought - displacement at its best here :)

I am writing about energy etc, up in Scotland we have (scientifically proven) more days when we need the heating on - allegedly, and where I live allegedly we need the heating on more than 25% of the time a house does in Scotland.

So - having a DFW head on - do you think its swings and roundabouts regarding money and what we/spend save.......and where we live?

    For example
    Housing is cheaper here
    But they need heated more
    We have lots of space
But can't grow things for as long or the variety folk in the south can
Petrol etc is more expensive here
But - we have less crime etc so technically insurance etc is/should be cheaper
Alot of online stuff like Mr t dont deliver here, does that mean i pay more or dont actually spend???
    etc etc etc

Sorry to digress its just got me thinking - does the money saving you can make matter where you live? Or is it not really relevant? I know this doesnt really belong here, but this is my favourite, sparkly, stripey, fluffy, sock/non sock rebellion thread...............

Sophiesmum, its your fault I was wondering how MS in Frunchkinland worked out and it got me thinking.......................

And I was thinking about sweeping up leaves, hmm need to write more rahter than mess about thinking up other 'important' things to do.........

Actually fay I think there are some good points there:D

There are some aspects of moneysaving that will be easier depending on where you live, but then again I think you countryside dwellers have less distractions and opportunities to be parted from your cash. Us townies on the other hand get the bargains in retail competitiveness. I suppose it depends what you are trying to save money on:confused::confused:
    Reduce,re-use, recycle.

  • What about the day to day stuff - does more choice mean better prices or more chances to fritter things away?

The reason I say this is am (as SM knows) so interested in the live on 4k for a year challenge - I dont know if I can get my daily stuff down to under that a year - although between the rent etc we don't have that much more to live on :)

We do have lots of big skies - and free stuff to do - although I am a 'toonie' too we now live in town (with a very big garden - though that has to be said) on an island though which means things all need to be brought in by ferry which adds to the cost - just made me think - someone mentioned petrol under £1 I think ??- nearly fell over!!!! We have only just got a tesco earlier this year. But stuff doesnt cost so much here like swimming etc but there arent many choices x

Mind you when I head 'sooth' I am shocked at the cost of things like the cinema etc. And it costs three arms and four legs to get off the island before I can spend any money on nice things!! (not moaning I have my lovely windy rainy island)

    PS NO piq today??

  • Hello again all :hello:
Hope those who are feeling bit rubbish feel better soon:beer:

Painted lady - well done on getting a booking
KTjazz - I've had several two day hangovers since hitting the mid twenties...and look back longingly to when I was 18 and could go out till the small hours drinking and go to college/uni the next day....and go out again..and again!
Fay - I definately think geography has something to do with MS - I live about 30min from closest city and work on the outskirts - I never do retail therapy because I can't be bothered to find a parking space! However I do spend more on bits for the house etc (hence the debt!) than I would if there were lots going on round here! C'est la vie!

Have had good news on my return home - letter from job stating a proposed pay rise...and this would be backdated to April 2007! Fingers crossed it all goes through without a hitch :j

    xx

Fay - I travel an 80mile round trip to work and back. I am in a car share so my petrol costs still only float around the £45 or £50 per month mark (rather than the over £200 when driving myself) Why do I do this crazy journey every day? Capital City (Edinburgh) wages verses small town council tax...

my petrol is cheaper at home, my groceries are the same in either place.

I don't think anyone place has it all. It all balances out in the end.

  • Yeah I guess so, my 'tiny' commute was only 7 miles here before I moved into town - now I try and go on my bike, but mostly fail miserably (0.8km naughty me) and we moved of all things to reduce my petrol expense, it was about 150-200 a month all that tooing and frooooing that mummies have to do and we only lived a little bit out of town.....

Although I had a year (during MSc) of commuting in and out of Edinburgh KTJAZZ so I take my hat off to you, we stayed over the bridge and to go 25 miles each day took between an hour and two - it was a nightmare - erghghghghghgh) good that you can car share sometimes. I think I would struggle to do it full time. Well done you

Funny how sometimes I get town envy!! Think its just the time of year, I get tree envy too - no autumn colour here, leaves on, big wind, leaves off. Edinburgh is gorgeous at this time of year.

Two day hangovers - easy solution, don't stop drinking tee hee (only kidding) I only started getting hangovers in my late thirties - I dont think I agree with having them to be honest.

I just don't like it when the basics - petrol, food, heating etc vary by region I don't think its very fair for any of us townies or bumpkins (no disrespect intended!!) - but then again the economy isnt great so we are all feeling it!!

This evening my new improved list

Cauliflower surprise soup on stove - best not ask
Chopped up some ham and froze it cos the date was getting a bit near
Dried linen on radiators and over stairs should be ok
Freeze the takeaway stuff from weekend
Chopped some logs and did some kindling put in garage
Talk DD into baking once the boy child is away
DS heading off to pals so not needing to feed him tomorrow!!
Put butternut squash seeds into a bag now they are dry and clean
One dead slug in beer trap - hurrah - one down, a billion to go
Fed neighbours cat for free cat fud - will write and read this to see what I can glean from all you lovely money saving types.

    Hugs to anyone feeling rubbish.xx

I come from the otherside. I'm a Westie travelling East everyday. the wonders of the M8. only about an hour each way at the times of day I do it. (add another 20mins with i'm car sharing by the time everyone gets picked up)

It's nuts, when I'm in Glasgow I miss Edinburgh, when I'm in Edinburgh I miss Glasgow. I'm Lanarkshire born and bred. I guess I'm a central belter for life...
