  • Depends on how old your youngest child is. If they are under 12 you can claim Income Support but only until they turn 12. In 2010 it goes down to 7.

yes i read that on dwp..my children are 12 and 9. i wasnt sure if i wud be penalised for giving up my job for non medical reasons. im planning on going back into work once ive gained more skills thru college.
  • As your youngest is 9 you have got until 2010. They can't stop you leaving your job.

You would be able to claim income support as a lone parent as there are no penalties for having left a job. However it would be reduced/nilled if you have maintenance, savings etc. and if you have a mortgage you would get no help towards this for several months. What are you planning to do at college? How long is the course? Is there any way that you could combine your studies with your part time work?

Depends on when the 9 year old turns 10.

,ive decided to go to college instead

Have you looked into doing both?

My neighbour did this. He was a sous chef and needed another qualification to progress. He did the course on nights over 2 years.

I was lead to believe (by Job Centre Plus when I was looking at options a few months back) that if I was on a college course we wouldn't be able to get Income Support as I wouldn't be available for work !! They said I'd have to look at whether I could get some sort of grant from the college instead

But I am slightly different position, as my youngest is 17. I wasn't giving up work voluntarily though -- I knew I was about to be issued with my redundancy notice due to a general reduction in workforce.

Have you looked at learn direct courses? They have a lot of courses you can do from home (at least in part). Or Open University?

As your youngest will be 10 in March you would be unable to claim IS from October 2009.
