is virgin media broadband getting slower?

Options
I've been a comcast/ntl/virginmedia customer for a long time.

I used to be on 4mb BB but as a cost cutting exercise reduced to 2mb and didn't notice any significant difference.

This was in the days when they advertised 4mb or 2mb BB but now I note it is up to 4mb or up to 2mb (like BT)

speed checks at 4mb used to deliver spot on and after the switch to 2mb the same.

Over the last year I've noticed a significant drop off in speed without any change to my hardware setup. It has become so annoying at times that I've considered upgrading back to 4mb.

Is this a ploy by Virgin to extract more money just to stand still?

I remember when dial up became a crawl and was priced to force people onto BB.

Am I just being cynical?

  • theres not been a 4mb package for a while and is now 10mb. Virgin do cap your internet speed if your a heavy user in the night and over weekend... when most people are going to use it tbh.

Not sure what you mean and how do you know that they cap speed?
Do you work for virginmedia otherwise how do you know this ?
Not intending to get at you but I thought that I got 2mb regradless of traffic and how much I used the system. I thought that this is how Virginmedia differentiated themselves from other providers.

To reinforce my initial post I only get 1.6 -1.8 kb/s download

  • virgin as all companies do put whats called an FUP in place and that means if you as stated above go over certain limits ie 10gb of downlods per month then they can and WILL cap your speed without notice or warning..although to be fair this is only likely to happen if it happens regularly..i have BT and they charge you 30p a gig over a certain level..my mate has virgin and between 5pm and 11pm its nomore than 2mb and he has the virgin 20mb ..
