does anyone know the rules on dla if you are given 6months to live??? do you also need to be unable to care for yourself/walk?

You apply under something called "special rules". You don't need to fill in the care section and are automatically given high rate care. I am not 100% sure what happens with mobility though.

All you need to do is get a form (name escapes me right now) from your doctor and fill in your personal details on the DLA form. You also need to tick the box that asks if you're claiming under special rules.
If you have a progressive disease and are not reasonably expected to live for more than another six months, there are special rules to help you get Disability Living Allowance more quickly and easily. You can get the highest rate of the care component whatever your care needs are. And you can get the care component and (if you meet the conditions) the mobility component, without waiting three months.

    From Direct Gov.

:confused:still dont know how it happened:confused:

  • Thank you sh1305 and meltdown - dont worry I have no intention of keeling over even if given 6months - always had a stubborn streak!!! keeping positive has kept me fairly happy despite failing health, and at present am still managing to work thanks to understanding employers, but want to spend more time with my grandchildren so will give up the job when I can afford to.

    Forgot to add:
Because you're claiming under special rules, you'll be paid weekly. If you were claiming because (for example) you're deaf, you'll get paid every four weeks.

  • Hello

Would just like to say that this board is a brilliant idea!

I am 25 and i have had juvenille athiritis since i was 2, i currently am receiving DLA at the lower rate and higher rate mobility! Some days i cant walk out the door when other days i can walk alone but i always stop with sore feet and pain somewhere. I must admit i didnt actually realise there are people my age in my situation(which is terrible) but its nice to come on and post and say hello.

Welcome, Claire! I'm 23, and like Invasion, I've been disabled since I was a teenager (16, here), though in my case it's by a combination of rapid-cycling bipolar disorder (not typed), fibromyalgia, EDS/hypermobility, asthma and half a dozen other, lesser things. I'm on HRM and LRC for DLA, too. So you're very definitely not alone in being a young "spoonie"!
Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. Do you need more?
  • Well I took a DDA assessment form to my doctor to fill in and amazingly he said I do not have a disability.

That is dispite me having a stroke in 1990 which gave me right sided weakness drop right foot claw right hand and various mental issues.

    Figure that one out.

Does the DDA state I HAVE to inform my landlord that I am disabled? My dad said I don't have to tell them; but can't whinge when they won't make reasonable adjustments for me. (which I've been told before - it's fair enough) Someone I live with, says I have to tell them I am disabled and inform them that I have allergies. Because mine is wheat, it's not as if (to my knowledge anyway) that I'm going to be given any medication with wheat in.
