River Island for under 18's

:( Not a happy person.

Okay, so if some of you guys know (or care. the latter i guess) then i've had a shaky time financially we travel costs, finding a job and just general money.
Now things are supposedly goign okay. I get EMA, i've got help with the travel in September/October and a found a part time job at River Island for Fridays+Saturdays-4 hours each.

However the fun stopped there. I was looking so forward to finaly earning some money, buying a half term train passs from Bucks CC and to start saving for christmas. WRONG! For 36 hours work, I got paid a measly £93! My rate is £4.65 p/h because i am 16 so that for me adds to £167.40.

Why did I get paid so less? Anyone else work for RI and was in my boat?

Thanks

Daniel

    Hi Daniel

I don't work for RI. Just a thought though ,did you pay tax? Have a look on your payslip. You should get this back eventually. They might have you on emergency tax code.
I don't know much about this area but someone else will probably be along who knows more about this. Good luck.

All I can say its the way things are these days. When I was 16 I earnt £3.70 an hour :( At the age of 19 I was on £4.40 an hour (and this wasnt that long ago!)

ALOT of jobs will only pay minimum wage tho, especially retail jobs :(

EDIT: Just re read and fully understood your message. lol, not with it today.
Check your payslip for tax and ni which you shouldnt be paying (how many hours a week you doing?) depending on your hours. If not then go ask your boss, companies can be very strange! I didnt get paid my first month as my boss forgot to tell the accountant that I had started.... lol

hi, you've probably paid tax. This isn't too much of a problem (I know it feels like it at the moment) as it is easy enough to put right. What you need to do is check your payslip to see what deductions have been made, if it's anything to do with national insurance or tax then speak to your manager about getting your tax code changed. You need to fill in a P38 form: http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/hmrc/forms/viewform.jsp?formId=758

If RI's payroll is good (which it ought to be as they must deal with a lot of students) they will send the form to the inland revenue and get your tax code changed, this should be backdated so you'll get the tax back in another pay packet.
  • hi, i worked for river island for nearly 2years when i was in 6th form.

we got paid the same rate as everyone else in the shop regardless of age. i was on £5.20 about 4 years ago??

check your tax and also remember (im guessing they still do this) that your overtime in your wage is paid in arrears. it also depends where you started in the month as well as to what you get paid when. really confusing i know!

yes my daughter worked ar RI and the terms were very good and pay. check for tax and ring tax office to get a refund and a new code -should be around 6 thousand a year. What is yours it should show on your wage slip?
  • :wve:

She didn't give me my wage slip which was a bit weird. I work 8-ish hours a week. :)
  • I worked at River Island for two years - when I was 16 I used to get £4.75 but I know it has gone up to about £4.90 now? Don't know if it varies throughout the country.
Unless you've filled in a P46 (not 100% that's the right form though, it was a P something) they will put your tax code as BR.

Try and work Boxing Day in River Island, you get triple pay ;)

If it's a tax code problem it won't read BR surely as that's basic rate - around 20%, the tax on this is more like 40% i.e. top banding of tax/emergency tax? Call the tax office - they'll be able to tell you if RI can't!
