Hi all, i'm new here, i have a question regarding this tariff for electricity bills.:j

Basically, i have a flat, with hot water and storage heaters, both wired to manual switches and timed switches to use the cheapo electricity.

SInce my bills were very expensive, I have disabled the automatic switches and use these things as and when i need them, e.g. heating hasnt been on all summer and hot water a few times a week (power shower etc fitted) and flat is very warm all winter thanks to downstairs!

So now.. I'm not using these cheap units between 8pm and 10pm, or in the afternoon, or at night as im not using these appliances.

From my understanding the day primary units are alot more expensive on eco 10 than a standard tariff because of the cheap offer for night units/stored heat units, this is now where my main units are being used.

Each day unit costs me: 14.71p each.

What would the cost be per unit on a standard tariff, not eco tariffs? I'm with Eon in the UK if its any help.
So... If 95% of my units are day units, would it work out cheaper for me to be on a non eco tariff? I;m convinced it will. Currently my bill is 98 for the last quarter, was 189 with stored heat enabled previously, but its still higher than it should be!

Thanks people. and sorry for the essay.

Depends on tariff but I think it works out cheaper if you use between 18-25% electricity during cheap period. Easy enouigh with storage heaters and heating water by electric especially if you use washing machine etc on cheap rate.

Suppose you would have to work out annual figures unless your supplier lets you change tariff for the summer? Not heard of that.

I think our standard units are about 11p. I do my calculations based on 12.5p which always comes in higher. How many kwh do you use a year?

i would say a max of 1000 a year, including cooking, washing and heating etc.

Thanks, i may need to ask Eon for their current standard tariff prices, as 14p is a bit different to 11!

Okay, I have been in contact with Eon,

    and findings are interesting:

    Standard Tariff:

Day Units First 225 Units: 25p
Day Units After 225 Units: 10p

    Night Units 4.7p

No Standing Charge either, and a free meter change. I have done my calculations and estimate I will have saved on every bill, especially now my units on eco 10 are 14p, and the day uinits are 10p after the first 225 per month.

I thought i would update this for people to reference.

    Cheers

Whilst on your usage, it appears cheaper to not have the "economy 10" deal, I would question your usage!

Using 95% of your units at daytime rates suggests poor planning.

We have "economy 7", and don't have storage heaters or electric water heating. And we still manage to use around 25% of our units at night-time rates, simply by running the washing machine and dishwasher overnight on timers and by having our morning showers before the economy 7 time ends.

If you don't have either a washing machine or dishwasher, then I can see why you would struggle to achieve 25% night-time units, but 5% is simply too low. You must be heating your water on day-time rates. It's all very well "only having the hot water on a few times a week" but those "few times" ought to be at the night-time rates! Ditto for the shower (if it's electric rather than mains hot water).

I don't understand the rates you are now quoting. How come you are still referring to night units - I thought these were your new rates?

It would help if you told us "before" and "after" rates.

Hi im on E10 as well with EON, and i have to say after weeks and weeks of research in think i finally understand this tariff now. i purchased a flat recently with all electric. i got my bill recently of £400 and was very shocked why this was so high.

basically EON 's E10 IS the WORST out there its a complete con. After doingf some reearch i can confirm scottish power and SSE support E10 TO NEW cusrtomers . with scottish power and SSE all electric during the off peak hours is charged at off peak hours.

however with EON this is not the case. for example 1.30pm to 4pm is the off peak booster times . so the underfloor heating and the e10 immersion heater is charged at off peak rates. BUT other elctric useage eg cooker , washing 1
machine, lights etc are full price !!!!!!! .

my understanding is that E10 means off peak for 10 hours. this is not the case with EON, hence thats why my bill is so high. with SSE / SP all teh electric during those off peak 10 hours is charged at off peak unit rates.

so i have been ripped off by EON , because ive been using my appliances thinking i was being charged off peak unit rates. i was told by EON when i 1st moved intote house it was the same as SSE but clearly its not.

has anyone had a similar problem ?

You can't possibly be only using 1000kwh per year. I used 7.5kwh per day average when I was being seriously careful - no heating at all, showering at work (gym!), don't own a tumble dryer etc. etc. Do you mean 1000kwh at off peak times or on peak times only?

I have economy 10, I live in a 2 bed flat and had accrude a a deficit with my bills, to the tune of around £400, as the prices had risen so much over the last 18 months and they had not amended my ddebit. Anyway, the point being - I am with E-on and my bills have gone up n up, and then some!!
They just tried to amend my direct deb to £150 pcm and I am £50 if deficit- i am in a 2 bed flat for goodness sake - not a 4 bed house!! I am very sceptical about how they arrive at this figure and how its costing so much because we try and be economical with our usage. I called them and they gave me some rant about wanting to get me to zero by next June, so I was on the level and owed nothing. I don't buy it. I managed to persued them to reduce it to £135, but I am still not happy. I really feel trapped and am not sure who to turn to as regards to getting my system/heaters checked to see why it costs so much before I shop around. That said it is impossible to find cost comparisons for e10 online. Any advice as to what I should do?

    hi deanolovin

i thinj the problemis with EONs off peak rates. basically between 1.30pm to 4pm and 1030pm to 12.30am only the E10 immersion heater and stored heat is off peak. Anything else is full price. It is only EON to the best of my knowledge that does this . I am in the process of changing to southern electric whom unit rates ans standing charges are cheaper.

also the other major benefit is that during their off peak ALL ELECTRICITY is charged at off peak , unlike EON;s.

    i hope this helps
