Has anyone tried this? i.e. using the 3 wireless dongle plugged into a router rather than direct into a pc ?? Any good/bad points, issues anyone can think of ???

    Probable wont work because the router would have to have a usb connection , and the usb dongle is a modem which when plugged in install's dialing software on the pc and their is not a pc in what youe suggesting
  • Not possible im afraid..
    Rules, Rules, Rules .....
  • Although three have now got a wireless router that allows you to share your wireless broadband dongle

    I see what you are trying to do and is possible, but not with the router on its own, without going into too much detail, you will need a spare computer setup with some form of Proxy server software, you will use the wireless router in its existing NAT configuration and plug the PC into one of the LAN ports on the router and configure it with a static IP address, set up the 3 mobile dongle on the spare PC and that is that hard bit done. Next open internet explorer and go to;

    Tools> Internet Options> Connections tab> Lan Settings

    Make sure the "Automatically Detect settings check box is checked and check the Proxy box and type the IP address of your proxy server you have just setup, depending on what proxy software you use you will have a dedicated Proxy port, this is typically Port 8080 but check the software documentation to be sure.

    All done, any problems just let me know.

    Not a bad peice of hardware spec wise, looks cheap and nasty though. ISDN 30, PTSN, ADSL, 3G WAN, CAT5 all in one box, how technology is moving forward.

    Thanks guys...don't know how I missed those router suggestions...you know when you look TOO hard for something ?!?!?!?

    PRO - the idea was to avoid the pc as a proxy if possible, that was the fallback option. thanks anyway :)

    It's for my neighbour who' getting dd1 a lappy of her own for xmas (she's 13) but they currently only have the 3 dongle bb connection...I'll investigate the two router options and pass the info on...no doubt I'll get roped in to setting it up if they go for either, so best I swot up early :D

    You are right about the looks !! its bit of drastic change from the 2800 but its a nice bit of kit, I have one in the office for IPSec tunnels back to a datacentre and use them at customer sites.

    Hmmm....think the 3 router will get it on cost grounds...although I quite fancy on of the daytek ones myself now ;)

    I agree, its a little bit pricey - I paid around £160.00 for the 2820n wireless one but it has lots of features (adsl and WAN port) and came with a free wireless N dongle.
