Royal Mail AGAIN

Does Royal Mail have some protection against legal action or something because their dealings with a friends problem would suggest so.
It all started when a lady turned up at the door with a very flat package and
said she had found it in the flooded gutter near one of those new grey Royal Mail boxes.
I ran my friend up to the local sorting office where it was examined by the manager who was unable to read the postage label due to the water it had been in.
A claims form was issued and a reply from Customer Services in Plymouth stated that though they may be delivering the package if they had not received it in the first place ie another company had started delivery from the sender, then Royal Maill were not liable.
THe senders name and address etc were included on the claim form and Royal Mail could have checked with them but my friend had to get a letter from them stated that they had despatched it by Royal Mail.
THe reply from Royal Mail was a SAE asking the damaged contents to be sent to them.
So now it is clear the claims form is not being read or they will see that the contents will not fit in an envelope.
THe package while in the gutter had been run over and the models buses inside had been squashed but not thin enough to fit in an envelope.
THis all situation is so unbelievable that I do think Royal Mail are untouchable legally apart from their own compensation scheme.
Would other members care to comment/offer advice.
THanks

im guessing the return address is freepost?
so put the contents in a box and stick the SAE to the box as a label
send it via a post office obtaining a proof of posting receipt0 -
Sorry but I'm confused by this post. If the address couldn't be read, why did a lady bring the squashed parcel to your house?0

Just a bit confused and I may be missing something here - apologies if I am, but you say a lady turned up at your door with a package which had been flooded in a gutter and run over and your friend rang up and the manager said they were unable to read the addess label...so how did the lady manage to deliver it to you?

they mean unable to read the postage
eg we have had complaints to us about doorstepped packages
however upon inspection they show no RM postage
meaning they werent delivered by RM
many people just assume everythings RM0 -

Too confusing OP, sounds like a bad dream. I don't see why you have taken on the responsibility for a packet found in a gutter.
Its not your fault, sh*t happens...
Forget about it and move on, its just not worth it

i can see exactly what happened
van driver is dropping off the foot posties bags in the pouch boxes(the 'new' grey boxes)
he's caught a packet with a bag and not noticed it fall out the van
its probably fell under the van
i shouldnt happen but if you dont see it then your not looking for it0 -

Because I did not say the address label could not be read.
It was the postage label could not be read
The address label was cover by cellotape the postage label was not.0 -

No just misread.
I did say the postage label could not be read.
THis is the label put on by the sender showing postage paid.
The address was on another label and covered by cellotape.0 -

I get concerned about some of the replies on here.
I have not taken responsibility for the package.
I am a member of this group and he is not so I offered to see if I could solicit some opinions or advice for him.0
