Christmas Traditions

  • Last year for Xmas I bought my niece (who had just turned one at the time) The Christmas Yearbook

You could easily make your own with a cheap scrapbook though as it is quite expensive. I think, from memory, all the family (we always have a big family get together with eleven of us) write in what you got for Xmas, what your best moment from the previous year was and what your New Year's resolutions are. And then stick in a photo of all the family.

As she was only one I thought that she wasn't really old enough to properly appreciate presents or understand Xmas so I thought this would be something nice for her to look back on when she is grown up as I know it is something I would love to have.

Edit: forgot to add that you write in it every year! The bought one has enough pages for 25 years.

Littlebird that book idea is lovely!!!!

I've seen them around before, but thought it was to do with organising your christmas etc, will definitely look into starting one of those up now!!!

It also solves my problem of remembering which new decoration was from which year as I could pop a photo of it in the new book!
  • I've just remembered something else we do. When the christmas tree is decorated the youngest child is lifted up to put the star on top.

Also DD and DS always have special wrapping paper, DS has Simpsons and DD has Disney Princess from us and paper with Santa on it from santa, and other gifts from family & friends is just whatever they've chosen themselves.

I just finished my Christmas shopping tonight (excluding DH that is). Also got DS his Christmas clothes and a new pair of NewYork Yankees shorts & t-shirt pyjamas for christmas eve. He's 13 and was insisting he didn't need new pj's, but he's not breaking my tradition. DD got Dora pj's the other day for christmas.

    Oh, I can't wait :xmassign:
  • I have loved reading this topic. I just love Christmas. Some traditons I (we) have:

I post one card to a friend to arrive on the 1st Dec. She laughs that mine is always the first she receives - its a principal thing now:D

I have the house decorated on the 1st December, when i was still working it was the 1st Saturday but its even better now!

When my dd was born (2003) she was given a few new baby baubles, mainly in pinks and as the rest of the tree was red and gold, it gave me a great excuse the next year to go and buy lots of new and different decorations for the tree. Now there is barely two things the same and I love it. We do add to the collection each year with a few new ones (sometimes more than a few!!!);)

DD has an advent calendar that I put small gifts in, usually a sweet but sometimes a new christmas bauble or a small (inexpensive) gift. A few days before christmas she gets a little tree on the pocket and this means, Santa has left something under the tree for her - this would be a christmas book that we can snuggle up and read.

On Christmas eve our town has a carol service in the square and Santa comes on a horse drawn sleigh (the reindeers are resting for later). Santa and his helpers then go around and give out oranges to all the children. this has apparently happened for years and i have no idea why it is oranges. But, it is amazing how excited the children get.

We do the reindeer food, drink and mince pie for santa too. Oh and a santa key as we have no chimney!

Santa leaves the Christmas stockings in our room, so we all sit on our bed and open our stockings before going downstairs to see what else Santa has delivered.

We often have people over for christmas and as I am cooking etc my DH does some driving, so to us, boxing day is family day when it is just the 3 of us "playing" with our christmas toys!

I am having another baby in April so I intend to make sure that the new little one gets all the treats and surprises DD has had ove the past years.

I also hope that once DD is too old for believing (I can't bear the thought) she will enjoy keeping it alive for her little brother or sister, as she will be 6 years older.
