Christmas Traditions

  • we have a few traditions in our house

first is that on christmas eve, me and ben will sit down nicely and have our tea.

Then we sit and watch a christmas video,

then its bath time. Whilst this is happening a little magic friend pops in and delivers a special present under the tree - PJs :D

Then me and Ben sit down together and read 'the night before christmas'.

Then its time to pour santas milk, and put his biscuits out.

Then off to hang his stocking and get into bed.

I think this year though we will be putting out some reindeer food too in the garden so that he doesnt forget them but rudolph will still have his special carrot in the living room.

another tradition i have is that i dont wrap any of bens or my bfs presents until Christmas Eve so i have one big wrapping fest - I love it every year - sat down with a hot choccie, box of maltesers and normally bridget jones on the tv and wrap away.

we do also go out before chrismtas and we watch the christmas parade in town which is for father christmas arriving which my little boy loves nad we go for a hot chocolate afterwards and the village we live in also does their own father christmas parade in teh night which has santa going round on his sledge around our village whihc my little boy has watched every year without fail.

We like ot do a walk to see the light house too - its not an actual light house a man does it every year for charity so his house is dressed up to the nines so we go and see that every year as a nighttime walk together.

It is also benjamins job to dress the tree and choose the decorations and he has a special letter form santa which is because santa is so busy making his list and the elfs are so busy making the toys that they have forgotten about poor Bruno and Crystal (our dog and mother in laws) so he asks benjamin if he would like a special job to make a christmas stocking for these too and what a nice father christmas he is in that he even sends some pennies too:D

  • One thing I wish I started back when DS was born was to buy a new bauble for the tree each year, starting with a '1st Christmas' one, and then buying a new one each Xmas, usually according to age, then when they're old enough they can help you choose a new one..

  • Since i can remember we have had a tradition of a 'under the tree present'.

Basically, its between me and my bro and sister. We all buy each other an 'under the tree present' which can be opened on Xmas Eve. It used to be, when we all lived together, opened before we went to our Auntie's on Xmas Eve, now we take it to our Auntie's and open them in private.

The theory is, a small present (can fit under a small xmas tree i used to have in my bedroom) and should be less than a fiver.

Its a lovely tradition and really means that Xmas is here for us.

My inlaws do this & I thought it was absolutely lovely on my dd's first christmas that her Grandma bought her a bauble and one of her aunties did the same, saying "every year she can decorate the tree saying this is the one that grandma/auntie bought me"
Then they completely forgot when DS was born and this Christmas is his 3rd Christmas now. I'm absolutely livid with them because there have been more kids born in the family since him & they got their baubles!
I've decided not to mention anything myself & when he's old enough to realise he hasn't got one, I'll get him to ask his Grandma & Auntie why they bought for his sister but not for him.

I just hope I'm there to see the look on their faces!

So if you do take up this tradition, make sure you follow through with all the future siblings & generations!

I would put the childrens letters to Father Christmas away somewhere for a keepsake. I found one 20 years later when we moved house and it was wonderful to read. My son shed a tear when he read what he had written and saw his careful handwriting as a child. Wonderful

As a tradition our eldest son always does the first footing after 12 on New Year, He goes out the back door with £20 and knocks on the front door. We let him in and he is the first foot of the new year and he brings us money.
This ensures we will never be short of money for the coming year. Its worked so far.

Some people also go first footing to friends and relatives with bread, coal and money. For food, warmth and money.

Last year was the first christmas that me, DD (only 1 month old at the time) and my boyfriend shared together, so this year, its gonna be really good, cos she realises now that soemthing is going on that is not quite as "normal" as the rest of the year!!!
