Income Support with DLA

How much do I suppose to be getting from income support?. Because I do have disability living allowance (middle rate for care component for lifetime award.

Do I get £60.50 a week on income support or do I get £136.70 a week on income support ?

I live alone, I had 1 child living with me full times, aged 8 years old. I am 39 years old male.

  • The £136 sounds about right as you would get the normal premium, the disability and severe disability premium. If you are not getting it at the moment i reccomend sending in a letter and enclose a copy of you award as they might overlook it.
  • Personal Allowance - £60.50
    Disability Premium - £25.85
Severe Disability Premium (SDP) - £50.35
    Total - £136.70

In general terms SDP is awarded if you live alone & if no-one gets Carer's Allowance for you. Once DLA is awarded the Income Support office is supposed to send you out a short questionnaire called an IS10, it asks about people in your household, if they get DLA or Attendance Allowance & whether anyone has claimed or is receiving Carer's Allowance for you.

Have you received an IS10 to fill out ? If so did you get a decision on SDP ? You might have to give the Income Support office a ring on Monday to find out if they know you're getting DLA Care. All the best.

I had been told by job finder plus interview today that I will getting £86.35 a week on income support (over my DLA middle rate of care component) but I thought that it should be an extra of £50.35 Severe Disability Premium but they told me it only apply for DLA higher rate of care component only.

Are they correct or wrong ? Because I am a lone parent and a young child aged 8 living with me and I am not working, but I only getting Child Tax Credit £34.75 a week , Child Benefit £18.80 a week, and DLA middle rate of £44.85 a week. So, I only getting £184.75 a week. (work out £739 a month)

They are wrong. As you get the middle rate care component of DLA you are entitled to the severe disability premium as explained above.

You're right, you should be paid the sdp as well. Zappster's given the right info. Your interviewer is wrong about this. If you got the high rate care component you'd also get the enhanced disability premium

It's a pretty poor show when you're give the wrong advice by someone who should know what they're talking about. Was it the the Jobcentre or one of the companies which administer the Pathways to Work programme?

It was the jobcentre that advise me ! I go back tomorrow to double check again as I cannot phone up work & pension department because I don't want them to think I am greedy want more money if I ask them about extra SDP money.

The job centre is also told me I will getting income support money in the next 2 weeks as it processing now. Also the job finder want me go to college to get more training on computer office work for future part time job because I gave up my two shifts work cannot cope with work and at home with different shift hours like 7am to 3pm mon-fri and 3pm to 11pm mon-fri as it very hard for me to spend time with my daughter.

Jobfinder also advise me about lone parent deal will explain to me in next interview. What is lone parent deal ? Is it extra money or just something to do with work ?

It's about getting lone parents back to work.

Greedy ?!?! Don't be daft. It's what you're entitled to and I'd be ringing them first thing.

Have you had the IS10 form which zappster mentioned? They will need this for confirmation that you're living alone and no-one is being paid Carers allowance for looking after you.

Additionally if you need money now you can ask for an interim payment of IS as well. A lot of claimants don't realise they can pay this

Some info about the new deal -

  • Agree with Sue on this one. You're entitled to SDP. Don't fret about being greedy or anything like that, it's what the law says you're entitled to !

Get right on the phone to your local benefit delivery centre in the morning & tell them you're receiving middle rate care. Ask them to send out an IS10 questionnaire asap. Complete & return it as soon as you can, put a letter in with it too asking for SDP to be backdated to the beginning of your claim ... and tell them too that you've been given duff information by your adviser at the Job Centre. Give them a week or two to sort it out & if you hear nothing then get back on the phone & request they speed things up.

Sounds like you might be quids in !! All the best.
