On the BG website this link states:

https://www.britishgas.co.uk/ManageQueries/HelpAndAdvice/TypeID/?Type=Case&ID=385
Why have you changed to regional pricing for gas?

We've introduced regional gas pricing to better reflect the different costs associated with transporting and distributing gas to different parts of the country. Our competitors have been doing this for some time around 20% of a customer's bill is reliant on transport and delivery costs.

I wasn't aware that BG charged regional gas rates. On their website I punched in a postcode for the Midlands and London and got exactly the same tariff for their 3 tariffs - 6.86/3.485p Click 6: 7.622/3.872p Standard: 8.186/4.159p 2012 fixed.

Anyone know what this regional gas pricing is about? A BG employee perhaps?

I work for BG and regional pricing for Gas was something which the company introduced when prices changed at the end of July. We've been charging for electricity according to region for years now and apparently before 1997 did the same for Gas as well so this is simply a reintroduction of something which we used to do. Prices are not uniform throughout the country but can be the same in different areas so this means that 2, 3 or even 4 supply areas could have the same prices whilst other areas may also have the same prices. We tend to group areas according to the postcode but as it says on the website the reason for the change is because of the rise in transportation costs. Hope this helps answer your question.

With the recent large plunge in diesel costs, I'm hoping your regional rates will be adjusted accordingly. Or do you also buy your diesel 6 months in advance?

Yes, I phrased my question badly!

I appreciate the justification, what I meant was - "are there any regional differences?"

    If so by how much?

In the thread on Click 6 someone posted the complete list of prices and stated there were no regional differences for gas - it was one price.

So does anyone have a list of regional gas prices for the 3 main BG tariffs.

It costs less to get gas to the Outer Hebrides than any part of UK???? Mmmmm

Everything else there except fish and peat costs a fortune!!!

    I don't understand that myself.

And as far as I see, regions where electricity is more expensive is where gas is cheaper!

Gas isn't transported by trucks - they use pipes and so the price of diesel will have very little effect on transportation costs. (maybe some as they'll use it to run the JCBs digging up the roads.

I assume this has something to do with the distance the gas travels (it needs to be re-pressuried on route) - North Sea gas is quite close. Now that the gas networks have been sold off ther could be other reasons less obvious.
