considering move to llu contract pros and cons??

Options
Hi
I am currently with talktalk for line rental and phonecalls (all time inclusive call package) and have aol for broadband (£9.99mth silver package) am quite a way from the exhange so only get 512 speed currently

I am thinking of moving over to talktalk for broadband (the free broadband offer with phone calls and line rental) as they are the only company to have LLU on my exchange, someone on the talktalk member forum has suggested that with my connection stats I may be able to get between 1 and 2MB speed on my line after the migration and overall the cost would be a little less than I am paying now.

All of this sounds good but I am not really sure of the implications of moving to LLU. I know at the minute to change isps all I have to do is call aol and ask for mac code and then move to another isp, but I dont really know what happens if I want to move to another LLU provider (if more put their kit in my exchange later), also if talktalk turns out to be awfull and I serve my 18mth contract how do I move to another isp that is not LLU? I have read stories where BT charged £100++ to reconect someone to BT and then they had to wait another year or so before being able to move, also read other posts saying BT would do "return to service" or something like this free so would be able to select other provider for phone and or broadband

does anyone know what happens in the above cases and also any other pros/cons for going to LLU provider
thanks
Jim

You could already be on LLU as AOL (UK) are owned by TalkTalk's parent company, Carphone Warehouse. You can do LLU migrations (but not really supported), and Ofcom should look into this really as it isn't an easy process. But if you do need to convert back to BT, you can still use any broadband provider, just not move the line rental . . .

dont think I am on llu from aol as samknows website say that aol dont have llu at my exchange, do they share equipment??
If I needed to move back to BT at some time in the future to move ISPs do you know if BT charge and how long I would need to be with them before I could move phone call suppliers?
I know these are probably a lot of silly questions but have heard so many scare stories about what happens when you move to an LLU service but I must admit the chance of getting a little faster broadband is very tempting and wouldnt mind the chance of saving a few pounds either
    thanks

I think if you run tracert from your command prompt you should be able to see if you are on CPW LLU or BT.
From the command prompt type 'tracert www.bbc.co.uk' without the quotes and see what comes back.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

they share as far as i know (cuts costs, and expands network coverage) - if they didn't, then that's just crazy!
  • I had a similar dilemma, see this thread.

Decided to switch to o2 anyway.
