Utilita no longer providing Gas and Electricity supplies (merged)

  • Just contacted EDF. They insist i have to switch to them first and then I am free to switch to another supplier. So I should give them my meter readings.

The letter from EDF also asks me to set up a new direct debit but provides no advice on how to do this - will they send us a form ?

I've cancelled my DD with Utilita to be on the safe side.

Energy helpline switch site recomends Equi gas and electricity. Never heard of these - Are they going to be as dodgy as Utilita? Do I go back to British Gas. Could be a cold christmas ....

  • I have also been with Utilita for the past year and have been overpaying on a monthly basis. This means that these guys owe me around £400!! I was slightly worried about getting this back so have spoken to both EDF and Utilita this morning. EDF will not enter any fixed term contract if you agree to let them supply your gas and electric. Utilita will be sending a final settlement cheque based on the meter readings you supply to EDF, no credit will be carried over. I am going to switch to EDF for the moment, wait until Utilita have settled the balance with me and then look for the best deal.

I hope this info is useful to anyone that is also in credit.

    Richard.
  • Energywatch will be making a formal referral to ofgem after their unofficial discussion did not yield possitive result.

Utilita have been advised and we should contact Utilita and ask for the account to be put in dispute. (This should avoid any heavy debt collection activity from Utilita).

The outcome may not necessarily be in out favor. Utilita argue it is in our contract. This will take time to reach a conclusion. We must wait and see, at least Utilita might be asked justify itself to Ofgem.

  • An update to my situation- It would be good to know how others are getting on!!

I sent Utilita a cheque to cover their bill minus the £40 surcharge, telling then to bank it only if they regarded the matter as closed. Funnily enough i got the cheque back, but they didn't tell me to send a replacement cheque, I am going to wait for them.

I have just recieved by first Gas bill from EDF- £116.57 which seems a lot for 58 days.

Does anyone else feel the same?
I am a fee charging WoM Mortgage broker.
I now no longer give information and opinion within the Mortgage boards, because a number of posters who, having approached me professionally, agreed my fee-which has been been made very clear at the outset, taken my advice (normally cancelling a [home visit] meeting at short notice) have then approached one of the fee-free brokers on here to arrange the very same deal I have advised.
Whilst I totally concur with the ethos of "money saving"- abusing the goodwill of a professional who provides a quality service is taking it too far!
