Also computers over 3 years are typically incapable of actually booting from USB hence my question.

    I think it's more like 5 or 6 years :)
USB was added to a WIN95 service pack as a patch, with USB2 added to WinXP, so would be bootable around the same time. My 2004 machine will happily boot from USB

I think the 3.5" floppy drive I have is nigh on 15 years old now. It's probably the last remaining part of a computer that started off as a 386SX16 with 2MB RAM and a 40MB HDD and has ended up as a X2 4800+ with 4GB RAM and a 400GB HDD.

Don't know where you got that idea from. Booting from USB has been around for donkeys years.

Three laptops less than three years old, one desktop three years old, but now unused.
I have no clue how to boot from a USB, not sure I've ever booted from a CD either.

Oh how I wish what you say is true. My experience is that "most" PC's and Laptops wont boot from USB flash disks that are around 4 years old - I have also found out that a number of packard bell laptops wont boot from USB flash drives but will from USB floppy. I should have mentioned "can you boot from USB Flash disks"!

My aim is to understand if you know how to boot from USB Flash drive without going into the BIOS namely using the F12 key (which most support).

    Cheers

I think this PC is about four years old. I don't know if it will boot from a USB stick, although I've booted it from a live CD a couple of times, out of curiosity.

My brother is a postman, and is supplied with DM shoes. He uses those to boot his computer when it isn't working.
