Do you know How....

Hi There

I am doing a paper on the average knowledge of home PC users and would like to know -

1. How old is your home computer?
>3 years old
<3 years old

2. Do you know how to boot from a USB stick
Yes
No.

There are a number of emerging technologies and these are based around the use of USB keys. I would like to know if you know how to get these up and running.

Not really sure asking someone how old their PC is, can be an indicator of any knowledge regarding IT - just memory of when something was purchased.

Also the poll doesn't have the correct question, what if someone's PC is 3 years old?

The other question requires more knowledge, but as you've obviously realised, you can only have one question per poll...
  • and do you want to know about pre-builds, or self builds?
cos if it's a self build the bits could be as old as Moses anyways..

On my main PC, the monitor, floppy drive, DVD drive, PSU, case, keyboard, mouse and external cables are over three years old; the motherboard, RAM, CPU, case fans, HDDs and internal cables are less than three years old. I also have three other PCs, all of which are over three years old, except for the case on one of them. The KVM and router are over three years old. At work, four of my PCs are less than three years old, but one is older.

    Yes
    No.

I know how to do it in theory, but when I tried before (several years ago) I couldn't because the motherboard wouldn't boot from the USB stick. I have PCs that will (as far as I know) boot from USB, but I've never tried. I generally find it cheaper/easier to burn CDs if I want to boot from removable media.

    Hope this helps...

    1. My home computer is less than three years old (about 18 months old to be precise).

    2. Yes, I know how to boot from a USB stick, though only in theory. I have never had to do it in practice. I have a MacBook Pro you see, and the technology is sufficiently reliable that booting from external media is not required ;)

One PC (on its third motherboard) and my laptop are over three years old. My music server is less than three years old, but built from second hand parts from eBay which probably are older than three. My two netbooks (must get round to selling one ) are less than a year old. And I have a brand new (well, refurb'd) PC stuck in transit because Dell's delivery system is too !!!!!!! stupid to cope with a postcode with a space in it.

My machine is 4 years old, although has been upgraded to 2gb ram and 500gb ram so will keep up with more modern machines with day to day use :)

I can use a USB stick and have setup a linux distro on one

Dunno how the 2 are interlinked, but there you go :)

PC is more than 3 years old with newer updated parts.
I know how to boot the pc using a usb stick, but I don't need to do that to run the apps on the stick.

bet the OP regrets asking now!

    Hi guys

Nah I dont regret asking - my "question" is really related to could you boot a USB stick - I am told by some people who are in "IT" that people dont know how to boot from USB.

Also computers over 3 years are typically incapable of actually booting from USB hence my question.

I hope to continue to gather your feedback and its interesting to see how many people have "self build" machines...!

    Cheers
