To be honest, I think the only person that can answer the original posters question is himself because he will only be happy with an answer that tells him/her that he/she is right .

I do not feel discriminated against if I have to pay for parking, when I display my badge. Blue badge holders are able to use very convinant parking spaces and so this in itself is a very large benefit. I wasn't complaining in my above post I was just pointing out that some car parks do charge. I always make a point of reading available signage as to that particular parking areas rules. A Blue badge does not give you a right to park how & where you want it just provides more easily accessible availability. I don't like the idea of using the phrase discriminating against disabled peoples rights just because you have to pay 60p to park, this sort of phrase should be used for more major requirements.

I agree and I didn't think you were complaining in your previous post ;). There are enough real issues to worry about without throwing the 'discrimination' card into the arena at any/every opportunity. It's like people claiming 'racism' when it clearly isn't. My digital imaging course tutor was accused of this recently when he said to save something as a BMP file . We had to laugh, but the person who accused him was deadly serious .

If you are a Chelsea fan living in London, you can probably park in far less places than the rest of us in the provinces - but of course it's not discrimination either, it's just the way London is.

  • Everyone else has said it plenty of times already, but up until recently I processed Blue Badge Applications - the scheme is Europe-wide and is not different in Scotland. It does not guarantee free parking for disabled people, it provides priority parking.

Most disabled people with mobility problems (certainly those under 65) receive benefits that acknowledge that there are extra expenses associated with their disability. Also, being disabled does not necessarily mean you are on a low income. There are issues around having problems inserting coins into a meter for some people, some councils provide a pre-pay system to help with this, but there is no reason why someone disabled shouldn't pay for parking.

Why keep quoting the rules on on-street parking and then go on to complain about off-street parking???

We have been unfortunate enough to benefit from a Blue Badge for a few years now and know well enough that in car parks we need to check whether there is any exemption made for BB holders. Some councils do, some don't Most private ones don't but some do.
  • Bleedin' eck... this is like the number of times I get people coming into my work, starting the conversation with "i'm disabled and..." followed by something completely irrelevant like "i'd like to buy a battery" or "i want to top up my phone".

I'm "disabled" myself, but I don't shout it from the rooftops, feeling sorry for myself, in the hope that someone will give me something for nothing.

And to the person who said it's "infringing on their human rights" not to give free parking, since when has free parking been a right? It doesn't really fit with "right to a fair trial" and "right to clean water", does it? If you can't afford the parking, don't drive the car. Drive your little mobility scooter instead. And don't run my foot over while you're at it, or I'll have no hesitation in "accidentally" smacking your "disabled" a55 with my shopping bags as I turn round.

    Rant over.

My neighbour had to pay a fine for parking in a Dunfermline (Scotland) car park even though he had displayed his blue badge. He still goes on about it as he seems to think that his blue badge equals free parking. confused0086.gif Not even in Scotland!

  • As i i am sitting here, the news has just been on, they are intending to crack down on people using badges who are not entitled to them, and rightly so.
I get annoyed when i see that, my Mum had a badge, often i would be with her or she came in to say she had not been able to park, or had got a mouthful of abuse from someone who had parked in a bay, 'for just 2 minutes, while i go the cash point', and was still there an hour later.
My mum died last year and i handed her badge back, now the radio news has said the going price of a badge is £1500. £1500 !!! I gave it back for free, that's not very moneysaving savvy is it ?
I wonder will they give me it back if i tell them i've changed my mind.
