    Great kitchen..

I also am on my second Ikea kitchen (moves).

I like them because they do tall cupboards that go up to the ceiling, no dirt traps & they are deep too, some brands are too shallow for a dinner plate:rolleyes:

I put down laminate as I after having MAJOR work done in EVERY room in 3 months we didn't have the money for real oak, & anyway the floor downstairs needs screeding (sp?) as its not level after removing walls:rolleyes:

But when we go round again, its a full downstairs screed & oak planks GLUED (not floating) so its a permenent part of the house.

Used black gloss laminate (again money issue doing so much all at once), but for choice would have had sparkly granite.

I would think about using all glass splash backs instead of tiles at all, I think the coloured ones look amazing.
  • We're going for granite upstands and a glass splashback behind the cooker, although I have read a few people on here do not think that upstands alone are enough and have tiles etc too. We're also going to have a granite window sill as the window is only small (should cost about £50) but will tie it all in nicely imo.

Have you looked at the coloured glass splashbacks for all round?
  • I have but I thought the granite would look a lot better...hmm I'll have a look at them tomorrow when we go out window shopping.

    You mean the upstands.

I wonder what the upstands in front of the glass would look like?

Have a look at the displays & see how they trim them. I love them, I think the black glass & black granite would look incredible with pale cream units & an oak floor:D
  • Do you mean glass splashbacks (not upstands) all round i.e from worktop up to the wall unit in effect covering the entire wall?

Yes (in place of tiles), they are the trendy new thing in kitchen design. My sister sells kitchens she first showed them to me, they are really lovely.

Thats what we've put behind the hob - sparkly effect, not plain black glass.

It was from B&Q - £80ish. So opted for the glass mosaic (B&Q) along the spalshback area, to save a few £$£. But do like full height glass infill, would also be wary of making everything the correct size/space, 'cos it'll be a bit of a hassle to cut to fit, I'd guess.

& as mentioned full height wall cupboards above the worktops would have been our choice, too - but the beam accross the ceiling meant it couldn't be done!

Granite worktops , again the sparkly strafire, or whatever it's called, would have been fav, for us, apart from £$£$ & the fact that they'll NOT be in fashion, a couple of years time, we feel.

Wickes kitchens are good, so are B&Q.
If you buy in the sale I paid a lot less than half price.
Mix and match the accessories, I once bought a really cheap MFI kitchen, but all the pelmets, plinths came from B&Q, as they were a quarter of the price of MFI's (the units were in the sale, but not the accessories).
Buy everything in one go, some of the discounts are on if you spend over something like £400.
And because of that always buy anything you think you may need extra, doors units, glass units as well as the normal etc if you can't decide. Cuterly trays, extra wall cupboards, as you can always take them back, but if you short of one it's really annoying if you have to buy just the one at the full price.

We have just black granite upstands and then black granite(sparkly) behind the hob...looks great. I hate tiles! so we had cream walls, with a feature bright red one and red accessories, goes well with black and cream. We have cream high gloss floor tiles as it connects with the conservatory. The rest of the house downstairs has the real wood floor, the upkeep is minimal, just a vacuum, and a damp mop, thengo over with one of the shine clearner with the mop. Rugs soften the effect, and mean youy can change your colour scheme by changing rugs and cushions!! I get bored easily.
