BT Phone line, MQ and £125 connection charge!

  • The £125 charge is the maximum and what they always quote. If there has never been a BT line before, that is what they will charge. If there has been a BT line there before then the reality is they will charge less (used to be as low as £10.)
Try and find out who previous occupant was with (nowadays it could be a variety of providors) since transfering is probably cheaper.

However,at the end of the day Disturbance Allowance has a portion which is based on the £125 BT quote, so you have already been given the money. This is what Disturbance allowance is for, if you spend it otherwise, just don't try to double claim.

Not so, it all depends on the state of the line. Both with BT and other suppliers.

As i said earler in this thread.

"If the line has just been stopped and the wiring is still in situ between the MQ and the exchange then their is not normally a restart/reconnection charge. You do however have to take a 12 month contract.

If the line has been ceased in anyway shape or form between the MQ and the exchange and engineering work is required at any point a connection charge will normally apply. 18 month contract £29.99 or 12 month contract £124.99"

  • if you have a phone that you can connect to the box dial 17070 this will tell you whether there was a line to the house that has been stopped by giving you the previous phone number

  • Hey BJ,

Have you a phone number for DHE, I have been trying to contact them to claim for refund regarding BT Installation Charge without success.

    mikeandtango .....

I had to pay a £125 connection charge when I moved into my current quarter almost a year ago, although to be fair there was no physical BT line - for some reason.
I complained to Defence Estates, who said that if I sent them a copy of my BT bill with the charges on it they would refund £75 towards it.
I accepted their offer and when a cheque came back it was for the full £125.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Sapper,

Phone the Housing Information Centre(HIC) on 0800 169 6322 and select the option for your local office. I'm currently in Scotland, so chose Rosyth.
If you need any more info try http://www.defence-estates.mod.uk
I hope it works out for you !

  • I don't think they refund any of the amount, but hope I'm wrong and want to be corrected!

  • Trying to be good .....
If you read my earlier post .... I moved into my current quarter December 07. I was charged £125 by BT for connection, which to be fair was understandable as there wasn't even a line into the house.
Defence Estates, upon production of the BT bill refunded the full £125.
  • They've told me they don't refund, so keen to see if the latest applicant succeeds!

  • I moved into my quarter in August, I didn't pay a connection fee (but had to get line rental as with sky-another story:mad: )

My friend move in last week and because the house has been empty for 2 years she has to pay the £125, they have been told by dhe, tough in no such words, thats what the distubance is for! even though I agree with this I still think it is pants,

it's enough stress moving ever 2 years then to have to wait a month to get a phone line, then get no signal with your current mobile phone bods:mad: !! haha I had fun as you can tell
    it costs nothing to smile:D
