BT Phone line, MQ and £125 connection charge!

Just moving into a MQ and have been told by BT that I have to pay a connection charge of £125! This is our first move so we are not getting any DA (mid-tour move). The house obviously has phone lines into it so I can't understand why we are paying to connect a house that should always be connected. Phoned BT and they said that they have no record of the house ever being connected - find this hard to believe as house is at least 20years old! Any advice please?

Do you know who lived there before. Must still be getting junk mail in their name. Contact their families officer, guard room, admin office etc who probably won't have updated their families list.Should still have their number.

If they weren't ex-directory they might be in the phone book.

Give the number to BT and tell them to reconnect it.

The house i live in now (MQ)has never been connected to BT but it has the box......it happens

though when I lived in singley accom i had a phone line put in and it only cost me 90 quid so 125 seems a little steep!
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • £90 was the connection charge but it is now £125, however have a read of this thread

I would speak to your local housing office (DE) for more advice. There was an issue in Northern Ireland this year regarding BT and fees but this maybe to do with new builds.

  • The house we live in now was empty for over a year and the old tennants had NTL but we transferred ours from old quarter to this one and I dont think we paid that much for connection.

Have you tried Sky for phone and internet? They proberbly wil be cheaper and a better company to go with. We have had non stop problems with BT since moving back to the UK last year and we cannot wait to go with Sky.

I do recommend that you try Sky.

    Hope To Help!!!!

If the line has just been stopped and the wiring is still in situ between the MQ and the exchange then their is not normally a restart/reconnection charge. You do however have to take a 12 month contract.

If the line has been ceased in anyway shape or form between the MQ and the exchange and engineering work is required at any point a connection charge will normally apply. 18 month contract £29.99 or 12 month contract £124.99

You dont have to get BT to connect the line their are other suppliers. Some have cheaper connection fees, shorter contracts etc eg

Post Office Homephone £10.95 a month.

Does not have a minimum contract for phone only. Will connect a line for about £110 and will restart one for free. Does not require you to pay by dd.Included in the £10.95 a month are inclusive uk,intl, and mobile calls at certain times.See :http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/content2;jsessionid=GE4EL4LIGFV2IFB2IGDUPLQUHRAYUQ2K?catId=19300217&mediaId=19800178

Plus you can use it in conjunction with www.18185.co.uk

If howver your looking for cheaper calls and features with a BT Line existing or new customers read this http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=1598074&postcount=4

I had to pay a £125 connection charge when I moved into my current quarter almost a year ago, although to be fair there was no physical BT line - for some reason.
I complained to Defence Estates, who said that if I sent them a copy of my BT bill with the charges on it they would refund £75 towards it.
I accepted their offer and when a cheque came back it was for the full £125.
    Hope this helps.

  • Used to be that if you explained it was a married quarter and you proved you were military you got the connection for £10 instead of £125. But that was a long time ago. Costs nothing to ask though.
