Trying to stick to the point and ignoring the personalisations inherent in your posts, as you will see from the following article, even Microsoft itself is now agreeing that the "over-kill" of UAC will be remedied in Windows 7

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/buggs/6056731.html

While some may choose to disagree, there are a sufficient number of Vista users who would welcome a change now instead of waiting for Windows 7 and therefore choose to use the Norton tool.
  • Microsoft never have claimed the implementation of UAC in Vista was the perfect solution. Computing, especially software and security, is a constantly evolving field and one where complacency will get taken advantage of. XP was inherently insecure, Microsoft had to curtail a major avenue of security breaches which is why UAC was introduced.

Microsoft can now afford to be less militant with UAC now software vendors have been steered into to write their software in a way that only those programs that require administrative privileges are developed to do so, rather than everything running in the same elevation as the user account.

Looking back on previous versions of Windows, it's ludicrous to have every single program in high elevation therefore putting your entire system at risk.
  • Being of an age to have actually used Windows 98, Me and XP, I actually love Vista. Sorry if I did not clarify this earlier.

As mentioned above, I also think UAC is an excellent idea.

I just want to have a greater degree of control over the UAC function and from all accounts Microsoft has now realised there are a sufficient number of Vista users like me to amend it in Windows 7.

Meanwhile - for me at least - the Norton tool is a convenient half-way house.

As with all other suggestions posted in this forum, it is up to all readers to decide for themselves.

Mines switched off. It does my head in ~ personal choice as it can sometimes hang for nearly 10 seconds when I try to run certain programs whilst it 'decides' wether or not to ask me in the first place. My dual processors are capable of billions of calculations per second ~ so WHY is it so damn slow (Again, its program SPECIFIC). Plus I hate to be asked more than once. I personally use comodos DEFENSE mode in place of it.

Im not arguing about it ~ if someone WANTS it, then by all means use it. I 'choose' not to.

The delay you experience before the prompt is opened up in another desktop isn't caused by UAC but by Explorer..

That may be technically true, but with UAC switched off I no longer have the problem

Anyways, lets hope Wndows 7 gets to grips with all these problems a little better

  • Win7 already has a more customisable way to deploy (or not) UAC. Who knows, in Vista SP2 there might be more refinements to the tasks that trigger elevation, as we found in SP1.
