Fed up with Vista's UAC ?? Give Norton's UAC Tool a try !!

Options
Hello all

If you - like me - are fed up with the annoying and irritating constant prompts of Vista's User Account Control (UAC) and are tempted to take the risk of switching it off, thus losing its underlying protection completely, I would suggest that you give Norton's new UAC tool a try.

I have been using it for the last few days and think it enables Vista users to get the protection of UAC without all the constant hassle.

A description of the tool and where to download it is here:

Although the neat small program is still a beta, Norton (for all its faults!!) is a large reputable company so it should be safe to use - certainly safer than switching UAC off completely !!

Hope this post is useful for Vista users !!

    Out of interest:

What are you doing that causes "annoying and irritating constant prompts of Vista's User Account Control" ?
  • I wouldn't entrust a fundamental and key aspect of Windows Vista with a product that does this, especially one made by Norton.

Nothing which I think is at all unusual.

For example, opening standard programs like Spybot and Spyware Blaster to check on a daily basis for updated definitions and running CCleaner at the end of the day to clean up after a day's web activity used to require UAC permission.

The basic idea of UAC is excellent but continual requests for approval tend to dilute its overall effectiveness on the basis of familiarity breeding contempt.

Entirely your prerogative how you use your computer, but I wouldn't go so far to say that managing a users IL is "bull".

If you need to update/run antispyware programs everyday I would question what are you doing on your PC that makes you need that - it would make me think that you are the prime demographic of people who actually need UAC.

There's your first incorrect assumption, Spybot/Spyware Blaster/CCleaner etc are not standard programs, they are designed to make changes to the system and therefore fall under the very scope UAC was introduced to ensure that only the changes you are authorising are made.

anyone with any sense updates their anti-virus and anti spyware defintions whenever they are on the computer.

you see the people who don't on here crying out for help after the event !!

your other comment doesn't deserve a response !!

You didn't mention antivirus - you are moving the goalposts. I don't know which you use, but mine certainly doesnt require UAC to kick in to update automatically whenever it feels like it.

It does deserve a response IMO. It is a bit strange to complain about UAC but then proclaim your always updating and using antispyware.
