Gluten Free the old style way

Hiya,
My sister has recently been diagnosed as being massively gluten intolerant. She has resorted to eating mainly rice and potatoes, with the odd gluten free purchase that she likes and can afford (she is a student). Are there any OS tricks for a cheaper gluten free diet that will be varied and easy to make?
Many thanks in advance and sorry if this has duplicated any posts xx0 -
free tickets to the gluten free show at olympia:

thanks very much for that, i'll book us all tickets for it so we can all know a bit more about it.
Does anyone have any recipes now or any advice/experience as it's a long way until May
Thank you x0 -

Hi Roshydoshy
Has your sister been diagnosed as Coeliac? - this is the illness for gluten intolerance. If she has then she could have foods on prescription such as pasta, breads etc. Hope this helps. Also she needs to watch out for hidden gluten in other products eg some dairy, sauces, jars etc.
Good luck!

Extra - there is a lot of information at the Coeliac UK website and on different Coeliac Facebook pages. Hope this doesn't duplicate what others have said and hope this helps.Do what you can, with what you have where you are.0

Hiya,
Nope the doctor has said as it is an intolerance she is not entitled to receive it on prescription - they will only do that if she has an allergy. But they will reassess in a couple of months because for various reasons they have known it for a while but didn't let her know, and said she could still eat gluten so it has made the situation quite bad :undecided
She has to cut it out 100% as of now so she is really suffering at the moment because she has been given no advice as such on it - I was just wondering if there is any tricks or advice as she cannot eat the GF bread and is relying mainly on rice, potatoes, GF english muffins and ciabatta and would just like something more varied.
Thank you for replyingx

There are a lot of Gluten Free companies out there who will send out welcome packs - your sister could try for these and she could get the freebies and see what alternatives there are.
My son is on a very strict gluten free diet (Coeliac) and we have had free samples from:
Livwell
Glutafin
Dietary Specials
Trufree
If you google these brand names you can find their websites and maybe get some free samples. Otherwise you can get Gluten Free Pasta in Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda and most big supermarkets although they are quite expensive. I use GF flour to make homemade pancakes, sauces, cakes and buns etc. Again lots of good recipes on the Coeliac Society Website. May be worthwhile having a look there. There are also lots of forums on the web where people exchange ideas and recipes so if she googles for that she could get some info.Do what you can, with what you have where you are.0 -

When you say she can't eat the gf bread - is that just because she doesn't like it? Has she tried Genius bread - the most edible one we've tried. Also just discovered this pizza base mix which is excellent Isabels . But no, gf eating is not cheap if you are buying gf substitutes0 -
she's tried everything, at first we thought it was because she didn't like it but we all switched with her when she is around, but she struggles to keep it down. we've tried to make our own in a breadmaker - does anyone else have issues that it doesn't come out properly using one of these? uncooked in the middle and basically like a brick!!0
