glad to hear you don't have coeliacs or thyroid problems, thats good news.

I sympathise with you so much when the doctor just diagnosed IBS and then just leaving you to it, the same thing happened to me last year.

I tried following the advice on the doctors leaflets, like eat more fruit and veg, eat more fibre, but this all made me horribly worse, so during one of my many sleepless nights I stumbled upon the low FODMAP diet, which advocates gluten free foods among other things.

Literally from the first day of eating low FODMAP i felt so much better and i also take peppermint oil before meals which i get about 80 of them on one prescription.

Please have a look at the low FODMAP diet online, all the info is available for free if you search g00gle.

    best of luck :)

Good advice, will look at this later.

I can't thank you all enough for your advice and suggestions. They might not necessarily help me now but you have given me things to try, especially as my IBS triggers are so vague and I have to eat something!

I've started replacing wheat flour with cornmeal (polenta) in all of my pastry. You can't roll it like normal pastry, it's too crumbly, but since I use it mostly for quiches I just press it into the bottom of the greased dish and it works just fine :)

I'll dig out my recipe for almond pastry later - it's literally just ground almonds and butter and it makes a delicious crumbly quiche pastry.

Another vote for trying the FODMAP diet - it made an amazing difference to a friend's life after she started it.
  • Do try KEFIR - I gave some to my neighbour who has IBS about four months ago, and it has helped her a lot. You can buy a little 'starter' bit on Eb*y (it's a culture like yoghurt but far more complex)! Good luck with everything.

Got back from the doctors yesterday and I suppose the good news is that I don't have coeliac disease or a thyroid problem!

My doctor told me that because he has tested me for pretty much everything possible he is diagnosing me with IBS. He gave me a leaflet and that's it. Not too sure what to do now as my symptoms flare up when I eat anything, regardless of what it is!

    Hi,

Sorry this is a bit late, I have "possible" IBS after tests came back negative, there is a great support IBS group on FB, its a closed group so unless one of your friends is on the site no one will see what you put only that you joined to begin with. Look at the mayo clinics website for the low FODMAP plan it has helped my mine tummy issues a lot, It is hard to begin with as its an execution diet for 8/10 weeks and then you slowly introduce things back into your system and can hopefully find the trigger for your flares.

Good luck if you want to PM me for more info feel free :D

  • Sorry haven't read ALL of this thread but can I just ask those that have been gluten free for a while, did you have tiredness issues during first few months of being gluten free?

I have IBS (diagnosed years ago) I am gluten/wheat intolerant (told this after negative blood test for coeliacs). Trying the FODMAP elimination at the moment although certain foods on the ok list are triggers (melon, banana) and I'm ok with onions, garden peas and mushy peas which are on the avoid list. I know it's all trial and error.

Have been completely gluten/wheat free for a couple of months now and have been tired all of the time. This week I has been particularly bad and by Friday I was feeling really exhausted and struggled at work. Not sure if it's due to being GF or just being back at work (reception class TA) or combination of both.

Any advice greatly received! Oh and recent thyroid blood test came back fine so it's not that.
    Thanks in advance :A
Its not what you do but the way that you do it, thats what get results :T
