But they told him today there is a 4-6 week waiting list! I am feeling so sad and the thought of feeling like I'm in this limbo for all that time, while he waits to see a relate person, makes me feel worse.
In the context of an 8 year relationship, and your willingness to commit long term, is that SUCH a long wait?

If you can be a little bit patient, that's not so long at all, is it?

However, I'm not sure I'd be willing to let him share all his angst with me during that time. "Honey, you know I love you and I want to make this work, but I'm not sure how it helps to hear you agonise over whether you want to do that or not. Please save it for your counsellor."

And I'm not clear, but if you're not also seeing a counsellor (either through Relate or otherwise), then I would want that too. You can only make this work together, and it may help you to hear what he's saying at some sessions. You need to hear him say whether he does or does not want to make this work.

  • Does anyone know any alternatives to relate in London?

Just to answer your question, if you're prepared to pay there are plenty of private relationship counsellors.

Do a search on the BACP website and put "Relationships" in the areas of special interest.

I paid £30 for an hour, in Sussex. It could be more expensive in London, but phone a few and see what the going rate is.

If you love eachother enough, you can get through this.

  • Hi Linguistic Chimp, there's a saying, "Once a cheater, always a cheater." so it's time to make a change girl. I hope you won't let yourself suffer in this kind of relationship again. :)
