This might sound daft but it happened to me on an old computer.
Open every media and audio player you have and make sure the volume is maxed out on all of them (windows media, quicktime, itunes, msn etc):idea:0 -
Goto 'device manager' (Right click 'MY COMPUTER' and select 'properties'), find the SOUNDCARD and update the driver va the internet
how do you update via the internet ?? my sons laptop needs the network controller driver and it shows up on driver detective, but have to pay to get it... tried updating via the internet and theres no option in device manager or less i am looking at it wrong ...0 -
Right click the ACTUAL needed device driver, 'update driver software', then 'search automatically'
How do you know your son 'needs' it? Which laptop is it?:idea:0 -

Kick me if this is obvious, but are they the sort of PC speakers that require a mains power source? If so you have to plug the speakers into the audio output socket and then usually there is a power lead from one speaker only to the wall socket. A third lead carrries the audio signal from the first speaker to the second. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Whats your operating system?
You should be able to download all needed drivers by filling in the relevant information ~
