JayJay, if you are anywhere near Hessle, there is a good, and reliable butchers down prestongate. They also do bulk discounts (5lbs quantities usually). I've NEVER had a problem with them - meat, always good quality, and the guys usually bring my order out to the car for me :D

Hawthorn - I'm on Kingswood so Beverley is nearer really (not to mention I like a walk round the market on a Saturday. Used to buy meat in Hessle when dear late FIL lived there though.

I used to live in Beverley. It's a nice place on a weekend, I agree.

I take it the Bransholme market butcher hasn't improved any LOL.

  • i have been saying this on the vent board totally agree. its terrible on dates and the quality is bad.lots agree others ignore the meat and buy it even when it looks well past the best.

sweetskint's thread is here ;) Well matured minced beef may not look palatable to eyes which expect it to be bright red (as it is in supermarkets  ) but in fact it will be good to eat, and may have more taste :T

I'll move this thread to the Consumer Vent Board, where it may be merged with the above thread :D

The last few times I have bought their mince it has been very grissley, grizzly, gosh I cant spell it, sorry!! I have stopped buying it now and use Quorn instead.

I also use Quorn mince for bolognese sauces etc. As for fresh meat, I got used to eating very little of it and buy it at organic butchers. It costs quite a bit more, but as I say I eat much less of it now, which is healthier in the long run anyway. :)
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I work in Beverley, and there's a great butcher there - lovely lamb shanks :T

I no longer buy meat from the supermarket - I get it all from the butcher or from the local farmer.

  • Though i might pose this question here as it is about meat in packs. Why does the plastic covering on the pack inflate, while others of the same product do not.

Penelope - re local farmer. Could you give me details of that please, and is it in the general area of Beverley? We're constantly on the lookout for decent meat, and we want to pick up a full lamb and possibly half a pig to butcher ourselves (and cut down on cost, obviously LOL)

I don't think supermarket meat is anywhere near as fresh as butcher's meat. I'm really picky about the quality of my food and never buy it from the 'low rent end' of supermarkets.

The trouble is Pssst not all of us have a local butcher - even though I live in a city I would have to go by car a couple of miles at least to even find a butcher let alone one I would want to buy meat from. I have to go to Beverley which is a town about 7 miles from where I live on the outskirts of Hull to get my meat, otherwise I go to Asda which is 5 mins walk.

I would love to be able to buy local produce but I would have to travel miles to find someone who stocks it!!!! Which does rather defeat the object.

No you wouldn't.. there are 3 on Newland Avenue, at least one if which I know sources his own FR birds and wild rabbits, 1 on Princes Avenue (but the meat comes with free flies!)
