Stocks and shares ISA

I figure round about now would be a good time to start one. I've already invested £3600 in a cash ISA so I assume I have can put £3600 in a shares ISA.
Where's the best place to start? I've had a look at a few FTSE index trackers, but I'm at a loss as to what else is out there and what I should be considering.
Any advise would be appreciated!

Investments come in all sorts shapes and sizes.
However there 2 main rules I can think of - long term and you may not get the money back.
This means 5-10 years before decent return. Would you be willing to wait that long?
And if you put £3600 in now, in 5 years you may only get £1000 back. Would you be willing to make this risk?0 -
I'm prepared!0

If I open a S&S ISA with Legal and General for example today (FTSE index tracker) and put a deposit of £500 when FTSE is near 4000 mark, and then e.g. in 2 months time it drops to 3000, will I be able to add another £1000 at the new rate. Will the funds appear separately in my account or combined somehow ? There is probably an obvious answer to this but I dont have any experience with shares ISAa.
Thanks! All my life my mother told me the storm was coming (c) Terminator 30 -

£7,200 between the two of them0 -
I've just opened one too. Now or never, I reckon
Can't afford to max it out immediately but just threw £1000 in. I've already lost £77!
I love to see instant results :P I'm there for the long-haul though so don't mind at all to be honest.0 -
Which one did you plump for?0

I opened a Hargreaves Lansdown Vantage ISA. I'm investing £100 (for now) a month as "regular savings" - half into First State Asia Pacific Leaders and half into M&G Global Basics. I dumped my lump sum into the Asia Pacific one to get a kick-start since I figure the market must be somewhere "near" the bottom. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong
For those thinking that I've chosen rather risky funds...
I have also just started a £500 per month pension through an IFA so this ISA is more my "play money" area. With time I plan to diversify but will keep it on the risky side and rely on the IFA to be rather more conservative with my pension while I try to make a better return with the ISA. I'm 34 so have some time to play with.
Plus I have my Cash ISA - only one so far since I only moved to the UK this year but I'll open my second come April
I've only just started taking my future seriously so am right at the beginning. Luckily in Australia (where I'm from) we have had compulsory pension contributions for many years so I have a fund there too which has been going for about fifteen yearsIt's not huge but I know I would never have had it if it wasn't compulsory so I consider it a bonus!
Any feedback/criticism on what I've done so far is welcome. I'm a HRT so also considering NS&I Index-linked Savings Certificates which seem attactive for me but I don't have unlimited money to put away and am also saving for a house deposit!0 -
I have a FTSE 100 Tracker, its obviously not worth much at the moment, but in 5-10 years hopefully it will recover and i will see a decent return0

Hi - wife & I have the £3k6 cash Isa's but the potential S & S Isa's return is surely too suspect and doubtful to make it worthwhile? Please can someone clarify? Thank you.0
