Thanks for all the comments, we've just went ahead and bought the full version of CS3. Found a good deal via Amazon. The good news is - Adobe are offering a free upgrade from CS3 to CS4 until 22nd December! So there is a little bonus.

that isn't a bad deal at all.. i'm contemplating upgrading to CS4, but unless there are any whizzbang features i absolutely must have, i'm not going to bother...

Oddly enough until the pound collapsed, it probably was the cheapest way to buy it.Cheapest method is to fly to Boston, buy it in dollars and fly back - Boston because they don't have a purchase tax
Adobe's pricing for the UK market is known to be a disgraceful scam. It doesn't change with CS4.
No wonder the word most associated with Adobe is "Torrent"0
