Daughter going to Australia - whats the best Xmas present?

My oldest daughter dropped a bombshell today, instead of going to Oz for a three week holiday in January she's quit her job and intends going for a year.
She intends selling all her stuff to fund her stay, apart from money what can I give her for Christmas?

Rucksack or anything thats for travelling.

Or add her to be an additional holder on your credit card :rotfl:

I wish her luck she better get saving so she has enough to see her through otherwise they will not let her in.

I'd have a look at the Australian governments website

    http://www.immi.gov.au/work/index.htm

so as to understand what she wants to do (and how easy it is to do). If she's under 30 she can work for a year ( maximum 3 months with any employer) in all the states. When I was there last year I met loads of young people doing this.

A good present would be a digital camera, so as she can record her trip - an extra data card is very useful too.

Best of all give her your support, and I'd start saving for a trip to visit her there too - :xmassmile

buy her a champagne balloon flight over Sydney (if you're feeling flush), a bridge climb, etc

there are lots of experiences and gifts on here!!!
  • What about a phone thats compatible with phoning home if she hasn't already got one?
Setting up a bank account that you could put xmas and birthday money in unless you can pay it in to the one shes got and she can also access it there.
Any slim guide books on the area (s) she's going to that she can take with her?
If she's already got a camera make sure she's got a decent size memory card or a spare one.
She's got the spirit to do it and I wish her well!

A second memory card isn't essential. I've just returned from a 23 day hol using one 1 gig card and downloading to disk on a regular basis at one of many camera shops. That's what most tourists do in Oz. Some get 2 copies, post one home and carry one round.
  • Not essential I know but her Mums is looking for small presents that are useful so i thought it was worth a mention, if the camera is a couple of years old, it may not support a 1 gig card, my old one wouldn't.
Thanks for the tip though, I hoping to visit rellies in oz next year so will use that bit of advice!

What about a travel diary. Can't think of anything else. I used mine all the time & now and again re-read it for a bit of nostalgia. HTH
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

A washable sleeping bag such as a "Buffalo" for when she dosses down in youth hostel type places. Lightweight, easycare "outdoor" type clothing to go in the rucksac that somebody else suggested. An international phone card in case she needs to call for help (well more money actually ;) ).

Our younger daughter went walkabout for 15 months, a year of it in Australia. She took some jobs to boost her funds, so perhaps a copy of her CV and any qualifications may be worthwhile taking.

Get her to send descriptive e-mails that can add to her diary when she gets back. I arranged to pay postage on photographs and negatives to be sent back seperately so that she didn't have to cart them around.

Cheers, my biggest worry was losing my piccies, as everything else is replaceable, downloading to disk not only freed up the flash card but meant that if I got my camera nicked I'd still have my piccies. The missus did the same and hers is an older camera with a 256 card.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions  It was a bit of a shock to be told she was going for a year rather than the three weeks she originally planned! :xmassign:
