Banging boiler!!

Help needed from you clever people out there please,
after several years paying British Gas for a breakdown contract and never actually using them, we decided to terminate the contract several months ago in so doing hoping to save us some money!
Lo and behold the boiler now decides to serenade us several times a night!!
I was just wondering what the fault might be , how much to rectify it and would it be a diy job if it was something simple.
The boiler is a combi Worcester 24i and it appears to be "firing up" in quick succession as though it is switching on and off once every 2 or 3 seconds at random moments, more so if the hot water is ran when the heating is on.
As we are approaching winter I would rather get this fixed sooner rather than later.
I have tried bleeding the radiotors and have topped up the water pressure to 1 bar but the fault still randomly occurs. Here's hoping for some spark of knowledge from you MSEr's
Thanks in anticipation.

Have you had it serviced recently? If not, get it done. Hopefully your local Corgi guy will find something and fix it under the service. I have a feeling I know what it is and it may be a quick fix..........But then again I dont pick wallpaper over the phone.0

The last time it was serviced was in february when BG condemed the gas fire due to the chimney needing a liner which was quoted at £650!! This was the point we decided to look around and managed to get a liner fitted for £275.by a corgi registered fitter. The same guy said he would service the boiler and fire on a yearly basis , but after mentioning the noisy boiler over the phone he say's he doesn't know what the fault is....Have you had it serviced recently? So now to your quick fix!!!!..............I would rather explore all the possibilities rather than get some other gas fitter/plumber in to tell me that it's going to cost me x amount of pounds to fit a new boiler!
I await with baited breath!!!!0 -
Any engineers around?0

My old boiler used to do the same thing. The only thing to fix it was to get it
(the burner thing) stripped down and cleaned, it took Mr Corgi 30 mins to sort. If I left it for a few weeks it would eventually give up alltogether. Chances are it will be freezing, dark and Cristmas:eek:. You need to get it sorted now. My boiler ran for years with this problem.
Good luck with it.0 -
enginechick, what were your symptoms and what did mr corgi do to cure the fault ie. did he replace any parts or was it just a good clean?enginechick wrote: »My old boiler used to do the same thing. The only thing to fix it was to get it

You say yours ran for years with the same problem!! You must have been brave to put up with all the banging and clicking!!
I don't think I'll hold out as long!!0 -
Not brave just skint!
Bang! bang! bang! eventually it would light, sometimes I had to press the button (on the boiler) a few times to get it going. This would go on until eventually it wouldn't ignite at all, then I'd send for the engineer.
Mr Corgi adjusted burner then had to clean all the gunk off the ignition parts. My boiler was ancient but Mr Corgi assured me it would last for many years with a little nurturing. I bought various parts for the boiler over the years but the banging problem was part free. I am lucky enough to be skint so qualified for a grant to replace the boiler, so I did. That said I had to go in the garage this evening and give the new one a warning, perhaps I will read the instruction manual.
Have you asked neighbours who they use or looked in your local paper?
Good luck0
