Got to say, I spoke to my mum last night and it made me think. She is ill, various things wrong with her, she has little energy and is not long out of hospital. We were chatting about easy things for her to eat (if she makes something she can be too tired to eat it) and tbh I found myself advising on some ready made stuff (as well as simple stuff like egg on toast, beans etc). ...

My godmother is 83, lots of health problems and having single portion 'ready-mades' in means she can get herself a snack; it gives her that little bit of independence that we all need. She occasionally has frozen meals delivered and we prepare one of those if we're pushed for time or cooking something unsuitable.

One positive prejudice I have - when I see someone buying lentils I'm often tempted to ask if they're an OS-er :D

I agree and if it had been a disabled person or someone with wallking issues I wouldn't have noticed or commented here.

Ah, but the thing is that you can't tell from looking at someone if they are disabled. I don't always use my walking stick because sometimes my hands/arms hurt even more/are even more tired than my legs, or I'll fold it up if using a trolley and put it away. I find it's just easier to assume someone has a good reason for whatever silly thing they are doing, as long as it doesn't affect me, and try to concentrate on my own shopping :D

but that's one of the main points that's come up in this discussion - you cant tell just by looking at someone

my ddil has chronic ME but doesn't look disabled; after a short shopping trip she is totally exhausted; she certainly wouldn't be able to take advantage of free fruit. she has a disabled parking sticker and often gets abuse from people who make up their mind without checking the facts.

a little tolerance would be really nice .....

Check the size of the packet! At the current prices, lentils bought in small 500g packets - in supermarkets, as well! - are definitely NOT OS!

Cheaper to buy the 2kg bags in ethnic stores if there's one where you live!

A quick confession before I go: we buy ready-made yorkshire puddings (not often as I try to do everything from scratch, but occasionally we do!). Hey, we are all only human after all! ;)

... I am also guilty of buying ready prepared mash (always keep about 4 in the freezer) they are great for pulling out if I or the kids are feeling under the weather, yorkies, ditto....

There's no guilt in spending your money in a way that suits you and your family :j

everybody, please stop apologising for buying stuff that you think isnt acceptable on OS ;)

  • I have the odd moment of "They're buying what?!" but I always try and stop myself because I know there are so many different reasons for things. For example, with DS1 we never bought squash - he got watered down fruit juice, milk, or water (cunningy renamed "air juice" at one point when he was feeling hard done to lol). But DS2 has had bowel problems since he was a baby and the specialist at the hospital said we were to do anything we could to up his fluid intake. Water/milk/fruitjuice just didn't cut the mustard with him and specialist said we should try squash. We didn't like it, but it was a choice between him being in almost constant pain, and buying something which would make a difference. I still shudder when I buy it but it mostly works for him.

I agree with the comments about disability etc too. I have ME, and when it's bad...I look the same as when I'm fine!

And often the only thing in my co-op basket is wine. :o

don't have access to an ethnic store as such (and very envious of you who do! :() but I found that curry powder, chili powder and a few other things cheaper in the ethnic section of our morrisons which is only a small one, definitely worth a look. ;)

edited to say - one hugely helpful thing I've learned from OS is that mash freezes really well! I always cook extra anyway to freeze a few portions, and if I have leftover veg etc I freeze it as ready made bubble and squeak. I don't like roast potatoes warmed in the micro but boiled or mashed reheats just as good as new :j

Please do not tell me I am not OS- where I live 99% of the shops only sell 500g bags (Tesco may stock bigger ones ocassionally but I never see them in there!) so I have no choice but to get them! We have no 'ethnic stores' and TBH I would struggle to carry huge bags of them (as I suspect other OS'ers might also).
OS rural island style seems to be a lot different than OS on the mainland I see!
Anyway DS has woken from his morning nap (hmmmmm will that mean no afternoon nap today?), so off for HM split pea soup and some DS time

Sorry OrkneyStar, no offence meant - I meant, of course it is not the people who buy the packets that are not OS, but the PRICE of lentils - it has gone through the roof.

I buy my lentils via a wholefood bulk shopping and last year the small brown lentils (organic) cost £6 per 5kg bag, then last month catalogue had them at £9something, and I still ordered them, but by the time my order was through, the supplier called me and said they have now gone up to £12 (£12!!!!!!!!!) per bag  . I still bought them because I really needed them, but will only be buying split peas (thanks for the idea!) from now on! Locally grown and more environmentally friendly choice I suppose!

I suppose I was having a go at the lentils price, not the OS people here!
