frozen mashed potato....it's not rocket science to make is it?
I always look at the people buying these things. Do they look like they may have a reason for buying ready prepared stuff? or do they look plain lazy;)

I will tell my disabled husband I can no longer buy frozen mash so he can make himself some lunch because it makes me look like a lazy moooooooooooooooo :rotfl:

Also I can't make mash with out lumps and lumps make me want to heave.

I don't know how much the supermarket hard boiled eggs are, but we sell them where I work ( still in the shells).
They are popular with people who don't want to buy 6 eggs as they won't get eaten and as we sell them for 20p each, it's no doubt no much more expensive than buying and then hard boiling one.

  • Ice cubes!!!!!!

Also, those trays of ready prepared vegetables

Milliemonster, I buy all those trays of ready prepared veggies, but only at xmas time. I'm disabled, but refuse to give up my kitchen, without a good fight. So at xmas, when I'm cooking for the whole family on xmas day, followed by the inlaws the next day, yes I do spend that extra bit of money on ready prepared veggies. It helps to conserve my limited resources.

As for the ice cubes, I don't see the point myself, but if you're having a party, and your freezers already full

prepared veg, grated cheese, ready meals bought pies and pasties with heaven knows what in them:eek:
I work ft and still manage to find time to slice some beans! I do buy good quality meat though, and prefer to avoid the very cheapest. Value tinned tomatoes, loo rolls and things like that though, what is the difference:confused:

Tinned tomatoes yes, value loo roll, nooooooooooo! False economy and makes for an uncomfortable day IMO!

Some things mentioned I do buy, but here is my reasons

Grated cheese is usually cheaper than not grated, so why pay more and do it myself?
Ready meals/Ready Made Pizza/Quick Food if I am away DP will NOT cook and it's cheaper than takeaway
Ready made pies etc if I don't have the time, I'd rather buy than do without but I tend to go for butchers ones rather than 'factory' ones
Ready made mash, I don't now but I have in the past, it was just something I couldn't make! With OS help now I can :D with a potato ricer if I get stuck
Ready made yorkshires, only get them now if we're going away in the caravan because I have about 20 inches of preparing space! Before I found Brian Turners very easy recipe I couldn't make those either so bought them :o
Ready made salads if there is just me having salad the waste is huge from what I don't use, so I buy in smaller amounts because it works out cheaper when you're wasting loads, if prepared is the only way then I will have that rather than nothing
Prepared veg is same as salads, if what I will buy and USE costs less to buy prepared, I might consider it

I do sometimes think, why not make that? I wouldn't however consider questioning why someone buys something as we all have our own reasons. I don't mind sharing tips etc but if I am aware it'll fall on deaf ears I don't bother.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • I cant understand people buying chilled ready made soup. The same amount of money could buy veggies and soupmix and make enough soup to have several bowlfuls, and the smell of a pan of homemade soup cooking in the kitchen warms the heart of the home.

Tinned new potatoes, with no skin on the potatoes.

What is wrong with buying some loose new potatoes and cooking them, no need to peel or scrape.

    It's a bugbear of mine.:o

I can understand that some people with arthritis etc may have difficulties in preparing foods, so a lot of the ready prepared foods are well suited to their needs.

But when it comes to seeing a young woman pushing a trolley full of boxed, canned ready prepared food/meals, it really is sad to think that basic cooking is too much for some to cope with nowadays.
Always consider your actions wisely, think of others, do you really?

I understand all the comments about pre-prepared products being useful for the disabled (my dad is disabled) - but as I don't see many other disabled living aids prominently displayed on the supermarket shelves, I'm guessing there's a lot of able bodied people buying them too.

DD makes loud (embarrassing comments) asking why people are buying pizzas instead of making them. :o I cringe and glow with pride simultaneously! But she never questions the ready made yorkshire puddings that go in my trolley! (never have mastered the art of batter, and now the value ones are so cheap I allow myself this guilty pleasure.

This thread is making me wonder what people think when they look in my trolley, especially when it's full of lentils, chick peas and beans. maybe they think I'm suffering with chronic constipation?

Well tinned new potatoes I get as they last for ages and don't go green, pasties etc I get but only when they're reduced. Make good fillers for hubby when he goes to work.

Mash though I get the dried stuff. Don't use potatoes enough to buy a big bag and I think it tastes alright :D

Trouble is sometimes people just need the ease of buying something easy to cook. I buy cheap pizzas even though I can make them because when I don't have long to feed everyone and run out of the house it's just easier. I don't care that I'm lazy at times! :)

I am guilty of buying ready made yorkshires as I have yet to find a recipe that works I don't know what I'm doing wrong but the last time I made them they hardly rose and my DD looked at them and said I'm not eating them!! So could you Please Please share the Brian Turner very easy recipe and I will save more of my GC challenge money:D for other things.
