MSE_Andrea wrote: »Hi guys,
Just to answer a few points on here...
We love it when people courteously remind others that something's been posted before.
We don't love people saying it nastily, if someone does, please do report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com where the forum team (NOT BGs) will take a look.
As long-termers reading this will know, I more or less "grew up" as a MoneySaver on the Freebies board so it's still close to my heart and I want to make sure it's kept the friendly place it's always been. But it's not just up to BGs to do that. They're volunteers, they don't earn a wage from it and we don't ask them to be on here every day.
You guys are the ones who post on here, whether daily or just now and then, so please help yourselves out and try to self-moderate by keeping the place friendly!
I've been using this site for five years and I've only recently found out, by reading someoneelse's post, that searching for the url will bring up more accurate results than searching for a word, so I really do hope no-one, whether a newbie or oldie, is being pulled down for that!
It was me that picked the drynites freebie for the email and I deliberately picked a newer one. (I know it's been available for several years as I included it in Andrea's Freebies, and subsequently the Freebies Freebies Freebies article, which I compiled, several years ago). In cases such as that we do sometimes use a newer thread because if we used the very first time it was posted, from, say 2003 or 2004, people coming through from the email may take one look at the date the freebie was posted and think we'd made a mistake and it was no longer available without even checking (believe me, that happens!)
Finally, I will talk to the current BGs and ask if they need more help with this board and, if they think they do, I'll get that sorted, but please remember the attitude we'd hope for from a BG is one of friendliness and helpfulness without criticism or judgement.
Thanks for reading
Andrea
Thanks Andrea!
Well said!:T
We're all here for the same thing and that is moneysaving! And of course freebies!!!!!!! It certainly has kept me entertained.
Lets keep it friendly and helpful for all. And of course full of freebies.

Hi Andrea...
Thanks for the MSE perspective, much appreciated. I have gone and deleted my post from the drynites thread as I can understand where you are coming from by picking a more recent dated thread. Maybe a note to acknowledge that it has been posted before would be a good idea?
I really do feel that if this board had the proactive BG'ing like it used to then a lot of the animosity and issues on the board would fade away. Things would get merged/moved/deleted quickly...
I seem to remember lorweld mentioning in a thread some time ago now that a "freebies inn" might be a good idea and I have seen this mooted by other folk on the board a number of times over the past few years... do freebie hunters think this might keep the boards a bit tidier like it has done over on comps board? and provide a bit of a freebies community where newbies/oldies could come for advice etc? and generally be a social hangout? would MSE be supportive of such a suggestion? (apologies lorweld if it was not you...)
I also think the GUIDE TO USING THE FREEBIES BOARD probably needs updating...oh and why not delete some of the mass of old pages??
Thats it from me for now...
ps. do you like my new sig...:rotfl: :T0 -
Yeah Mcr that was me that recommended a freebies chat off topic thread! I think it would give us all an opportunity to chat amongst ourselves, kind of a get to know one another thread.
It also would be a place for new members to introduce themselves and ask questions about anything that they need to know concerning the freebies board.
I feel it would heighten our sence of community. So thanks Mcr for bringing it back up. I'd also be interested to see other peoples thoughts on a chat thread.
P.s yeah your sig is great!:hello:0 -
Hi Andrea,
Many thanks for reading and replying to this thread...
We needed this topic to be raised, as things have been ridiculous on this board in recent months with so very many dups being posted, and not merged I find it best just to bump a thread, and say "still available".
I know very well that it isn't the fault of people doing this, they find a freebie and can't see it posted in the first few pages, so think it must be new, I and many others have made the same mistake, until we learn from other FM's how to use the search facility correctly (it dosen't always work, but hey ho, most times it does) I must say now that it was Mountainchrisriver who helped me months ago on the Q & A board. Many thanks MCR...
What I personally feel is that we need a sticky to be posted (closed thread) that us veterans can click, and politely say please read this to see how to do a search.
Lorwelds idea is great for there to be a thread for newbies/oldies to get to know each other, and exchange views.
Thank you Lorweld for suggesting this... .
I did state in post 12 of this thread for Mountainchrisriver to be a BG, but I would also like to nominate Jacktyler too, both of them know their way around this board, and how to search for previously posted freebies.... :T
so please do consider this Andrea.
Thank you for reading this post eveyrone, and this very vital thread...
Sarah, thank you for your bravery to post huns...
It really did need saying.

Great idea to post this advice as a freebie (after all, technically it is true!). I have only recently started to search this way and have now successfully posted links not duplicated. This advice is GOLDEN and makes searching SO much easier.
Cheers, me dears!:A Every moment is a gift. That's why we call it the present.!:A

Yeah its so easy when you start out,, to post duplicated posts. We've all done it so I don't think there is any need for some of the rude comments that follow it.
I think the problem is, some people think they own the place and would do anything to be a board guide and think by constantly reminding people in a patronising or condescending way, they are getting closer to their dream, which they may be, but to most, look a tit.
I'd personally offer the board guide 'status' to those who give out the most freebies first and those who aren't rude or patronising, as the rude/patronising will become trigger happy.
The majority of Board Guides etc are pretty good, but I have come across a few who like the power of being on a board 24/7 and delete perfectly reasonable posts, whilst letting their board friends do what they like. This is going to happen on messageboards as all sorts of people come along, but it's obvious who they are pretty instantly to someone who doesn't spend their life on here.
That's why if I were asked to nominate who to be offered the chance of being a board guide, i'd put forward lorweld, jumblejack, flickering ember, Martins Doll and kez1234 as possibles. They frequently offer useful freebies.
Their are probably are others who post just as much, it's just these names that consistently pop up at me when i'm looking at freebies - I know i've missed a big name here somewhereI haven't meant to miss out any freebie big hitter :rotfl:
I think a board guide should only be able to merge threads of the same freebies, not delete posts (I'm not sure they can or if it's Mods that do that). Abuse can be reported at the push of a button.
I'd sooner see a freebie posted two or three times, than not at all and then merged.0 -

^^They aren't official nominations by the way, just people I would consider if I was MSE Miroslav :rotfl:0
