Try charity shops, especially those in towns with more wealthy residents (just look at the cost of houses locally for a good idea - or one with a private school). I was in one a week ago where there were a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes for £9.50!

I was in Monsoon this week and they have a good sale on right now, with lots and lots of lovely dresses on the rails. Laura Ashley have also got a sale on right now, and they do lovely evening wear too. My friend's daughter got a plain cerise dress for her prom this year, and then had some black sequins and a silk flower (like a gardenia) sewn onto it to make it individual, and she looked lovely. All her accessories were from places like Primark/New Look, or borrowed, etc.

Getting one online is fine, but if you spend quite a bit and the fit isn't fab, it's a pain. Buy something with the aim of selling it on again afterwards to cut your losses perhaps.

  • Debenhams, TKMaxx, Tesco, Matalan, George at Asda, House of Fraser, New Look - these all have lovely prom style dresses cheaper than £110.

I'd definitely recommend TK Maxx, they have a good range of prom style dresses in and they're not too expensive.

If you have plenty of time, you could go down to a fabric shop and buy some silk fabric and have a dress made by a tailor, or even buy yourself a dress pattern and make it yourself if you can get hold of a sewing machine. Particularly good for if your daughter wants something unique, or is difficult to shop for and you're on a budget!

Have you thought about renting? I mean seriously when will they wear it again?

Mine cost £30 to rent for the night, was gorgeous and I never needed it again :)

I agree with this. I took my niece to a little boutique in Brighton that sold and rented out prom dresses. She was guaranteed to be the only one wearing it that night, unlike if you get it from Debenhams for example...she looked gorgeous in it. It cost £40 to hire, she has loads of lovely pictures to remember it by, and seriously, it would just be hanging up in her wardrobe now, gathering cobwebs. As much as she loved it, she would rarely get the chance to wear it again. Just google prom dresses and the area you live in, see if there are any for hire shops or boutiques.

  • Ebay is the way forward. I always get monsoon dresses... usually about £20-30 will get you a stunning one, I got one for £11 including postage before now. Sometimes you can even get brand new ones for same price. And the best bit is you can sell them on again, often at a profit. Go for older styles, as this seasons ones obviously sellmfor more! I wouldnt hire personally as you cant ever recover any of the momney, ebay u can! :)

Do you have any second hand dress shops near you - there is one near me that only takes the 'posher' brands like Monsoon, coast etc and I've managed to get for good prices. Ebay is also good if you are a standard size - unfortunately I always need to try things on!

If she isn't going to wear it again and you don't have the second hand option then hiring might be best. Though you are likely to have to pay a deposit.

Have you thought of hiring a dress for your DD. There is a company in Newport, South Wales named "Just One Nite" www.justonenite.co.uk who have over 350 dress for sale and hire. Hiring starts from £89. At least your DD won't find someone else wearing the same dress as her at her prom as she may do if a dress is bought from the high street!!
  • i got mine from debenhams a few years back during 1 of their 20% off events. if you get a debenhams card on the day, you get an additional 10% off. obviously you'd have to clear the balance in full to get the benefits though.

mine wasnt a typical "prom dress" but that worked well as i wore it for a couple of other dressy occasions afterwards.

If their is a Mango near you, they do some lovely dresses. As do next and river island if your looking for something on everyones high street.
