internet access abroad

with my wife and kids (10 & 12) we are going travelling next year for circa 9 months - visiting USA/ Canada/ New Zealand etc. We have bought a laptop to take with us and will want to have internet access on the go. How are we best to arrange this - the laptop has intel centrino so where there is a wifi hotspot we should be OK but on the beach in Australia?? :xmastree: Confused and non technical!!
