On 12th November 2006, two-year-old Emma Clittie, was rushed into the Accident and Emergency Department near her home in Skelmersdale. After undergoing months of agonising pain, and examinations, Doctor's finally discovered the lump in her belly. After months of seeing their baby in agony, loving parents Stephen and Samantha never dreamed that the worst battle was yet to come. Emma was diagnosed with a rare form of child cancer that only affects eighty children in the UK. She is currently undergoing an 18-month, intensive chemotherapy course at Alderhay Children's Hospital and has been given a 20 to 30 percent chance of beating the disease. If the treatment is not successful, Stephen and Samantha need to raise 300,000 euros to take Emma for a lifesaving operation in the USA. The appeal was launched in Spain in early January, when local website www.torrevieja.co.uk became involved in the fundraising trail. Since then, numerous events have been organised and further appeals established along the whole of the Costa Blanca. British ex-pats have shown huge support and dedication to the appeal, and the chances of Emma being able to receive the lifesaving treatment are increasing day by day. TKO DJ, Krazy Chris, became involved, in an effort to boost donations, and inspire others to join the campaign.
Three years ago, Krazy Chris took up the position as the Costa Blanca's looniest DJ, making a huge impression on listeners, and the community in general. He has now left the show, to pursue other ventures in Italy, but after making such an entrance, he was never going to leave quietly. Renowned for his charismatic humour and characteristic head of long curly hair, Chris valiantly agreed to sacrifice his locks, in aid of the appeal. Chris's mate 'Big Al' from Dolores went along to give moral support and also ended up having his long hair chopped off, to support the campaign. What a great sport! 'Mike The Shirt' bid three hundred euros, to be the lucky member of the audience to cut off Chris's beloved ponytail, before Jay and Kim, from the 'Hair Studio' at Via Park II, Playa Flamenca, stepped in to complete the job. Chris had sported the same look for twenty years, so it was a real shock for family and friends to see him with short hair! However, reports from the TKO Studio announced that the new image really suits him, and that he looks ten years younger. Managing Director of the 'Ambasun' emporium, here in Spain, Carl Wilson, also heard of the 'Baby Emma' appeal, and found the plight of her parents both courageous and moving. Having young grandchildren himself, he felt great empathy for the cause, and that it was something that the company could become involved in. "Ambasun had a good year last year, and we wanted to do something worthwhile with the money." he said.
And what better way than to invest it into the life of a two-year-old girl? Carl immediately contacted the Head Office in the UK to seek approval from the group's Managing Director, Brendan Maxwell. Brendan was also in agreement that Ambasun should offer their assistance, and a hefty sum of 30,000 euros was pledged! On Saturday evening, Carl unexpectedly presented the donation at Krazy Chris's bar, giving a very humble speech. However, he did 'throw down the gauntlet' to other large Real Estate Companies in the area, to match the donation, and participate in the campaign. Carl also went on to put pressure on their bank, and some of the building companies that Ambasun collaborate with, to make a similar contribution. Ambasun have since created a link on their website www.ambasun.international.com where people can follow the process through to the Baby Emma site. A raffle was also held at the event and numerous individual donations offered, leaving a grand total of 33,000 euros to be directed to the 'Baby Emma' Appeal. Many thanks, to everyone involved in raising money and supporting the events on Saturday. It is not too late to make a donation, as the appeal continues, and events are being planned throughout the area. Please help by supporting charity events, so that the life of a two-year-old girl can be saved.
