    hi guys,
i've not been keeping up to date on this thread so i'm not sure if this has been posted already. Comet (or my local one in sheffield at least) have the humax 800 single tuner recorder reduced to 120 squid as a discountinued line. get some good reviews so may be worth paying the extra 20 for. HTH
(picked up the humax9200 while i was there. very impressed so far :D

Note the Humax 8000T is reliable and has a good reputation but it's facilities are very limited. For example being a single tuner device you cannot record a programme and watch another at the same time. Even more limiting you cannot even play a previous recording whilst recording a current programme.

  • Can I ask why you have / need 3 PVR's?

(Justify if I need more than one!)

I took them both back to Argos in disgust. The Techno 101 is still working sweet after 12 hours, have done 3 recordings and a pause on coronation street, or emmerdale... can't remember which - and now happily chugging away at Saturday Night Fever....

    Fingers crossed....

Still think it's fantastic for the price, considering I paid £179.99 for the 80 GB Sagem and £129.99 for the 40 GB version, both tempremental and noisey.

Will see what the update on the 28th brings.

    Still smiling...
  • Have been playing with this machine for a few days and whilst I seem to be lucky in that it functions mostly perfectly "as on the tin" with no signal problems from the Crystal Palace transmitter, I found all to soon that it won't record subtitles. It is exactly the same as a pace twinview - real time subtitles are fine but time-shift and normally recorded subtitles are not replayed.

The EPG had gaps in it but that is merely annoying though another problem I found was the unit did not turn on with any channel number buttons - only with the power button and then as you might expect to the last viewed channel.

selecting channels via now and next was annoying - using channel up/down in "preview" mode needs the OK to actually change preview channel so you cannot peek at other channel listings then select them - only pick a channel, OK it but then you have to actually EXIT out of the mode to watch the selected channel.

Dunno whether they are ever going to record subtitles - it is a necessity for deaf old me - so I guess the best thing would be to take it back to ALDI and possibly wait for the Humax twin.

I have a Humax single tuner and that works fine - subtitles perfect - comes on with any channel number button though it ignores the button you pressed and takes a while to boot to the last viewed channel.

Shame - I kinda liked the Technosonic but subtitles are the killer application for me!
  • I needed to get a PVR with subtitles and found that the Fusion models did this, though you might need to wait for a software upgrade which happened for me the following Friday after buying.

    Cheers
  • I had same problems with PVR not recognising Hard Drive - opened it up and found red wire to HD loose. Pushed it in and now everything works great.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
i got one as well, but have a few problems.
firstly it freezees on pause, and every morning i find that it deleted programmes on the hard drive except for the one i recorded on thursday! any one know why it does this?
  • We got a PVR from ALDI yesterday. The spec looks good, but as others have said the software is buggy, e.g. if we watch ITV1 then change to another channel and back to ITV1 then there is no sound on ITV1. But the sound did work last night if we reduced the volume on the PVR to less than 100%, but so far we've been unable to reproduce.

We've also suffered the 'no signal' problem others have reported. We can get round this (and the sound problem on ITV1) by performing a 'manual software upgrade', even though there is no new software.

I know performing the manual software upgrades isn't ideal, but we're going to give the PVR a chance and wait to see what bugs are fixed in the next software upgrade (dunno when this is likely to be).

If all else fails we'll get our money back and get another similar spec box - the prices may drop the other side of New Year.

Best wishes to all for Christmas and the New Year.

I picked mine up today, my 3rd box after 2 sagems, the 40, then the 80 models. I was expecting the worse after all the problems you guys are having. Opened it up, plugged it in, turned it on, boot displayed for about 30 seconds, then it turned off. By then, had found the remote, so turned her on. Did a channel scan and set screen etc.. all pukka! Fast EPG etc... tried a recording from standby, pukka - infact - absolutely over the moon! I am on Hannington, so no ITV sound issue. I am wondering if perhaps by leaving it alone until it has booted up and turned off - finalising set up maybe for first boot up, is the route of the troubles. I only say this as on the first boot, it is programmed to load user prefs etc... so by trying to fast boot it is screwing it up?

Is is so fast compared to the 80GB sagem I took back to Argos today, quiet too. It boots from standby almost instantly and channel hops like a freight train. No lock ups, no quirks, just a damn good box, and for that price! Thanks Aldi, very happy bunny.

Looks the part too, also the buttons on the top are handy for when the remote goes missing, often in my house!

Great box, great performance, great price. Buy,buy buy!!!!

Or am I just one of the lucky few?

AAARRRRGGGHHHH!! Turned it on this morning - No Signal!!

Rebooted and all OK again. My current mindset is to hang out until the software update goes live, unless I see something else for around the same money...
  • well mine seems to working sweet ..except for the itv sound problem..
recorded a couple things early this morniong while i was in bed and got up to see they had worked..tried pausing and that works ..the only thing that i wasnt keen on wa the epg.it seems a bit fiddly and there was no info on some channels but im gonna give it a go for a couple of days and like someone else said ive not really been looking for faults.

by the way..ive read through all the posts but i cant rember if someone said the itv fault could be fixed by a software upload? is that the case?
    mmmm free stufffffffff :p
